    Behind the phone Knee Patches picks up a pad of paper and turns it to face Haru, even as he turns the camera on. Shorty lifts the knife to lie across his throat. Haru sucks in a breath, and reads. “Kambe Daisuke. You have twenty-four hours. Collect twenty billion yen – twenty billion yen?!” Haru stops, somewhere between wanting to laugh and cry. The knife at his throat digs in, and he keeps reading. “Twenty billion yen worth of large precious stones, and have them ready for exchange. Every hour you keep us waiting, we carve him up some more.”
