How she and Mike’s faces had fallen after seeing the name ‘Henry’. And how, out of the corner of her eye, Karen could’ve sworn Nancy had walked in holding a shotgun.

“They’re fine.” Nancy said with a firmness that’d make grown men shudder. She sounded kind of angry about it.
“That’s… good.” Robin nodded, almost feeling as if she had to convince Nancy of the fact.
“They don’t need me anymore.” Nancy hid her face between her knees before Robin could read the blatant lie. “Holly’s room was fixed yesterday, and she said if Holly the Heroic can face a real-life monster then she can face sleeping in her own bed, and I thought she wouldn’t last the whole night, but she did and when we saw mom in hospital today she told her and Mom said she was really brave and I- I don’t think I’m really brave, Robin.” Nancy showed her face, suddenly red and teary-eyed. “I think I was sort of wishing she’d get scared and come back to my room.”
aka the world is saved and vecna is dead and Nancy has no clue what to do about that.

Three glass-shattering bombshells all at once. Nancy hadn’t spoken since the second grade, possibly earlier. Nancy didn’t have any friends. And the third bombshell, which happened in Robin’s head, being Robin might be the only person in this entire school to hear Nancy speak.

Nancy felt her hand shake a little. She couldn’t remember her last article. “How do you soak it up?”
The woman leaned in close. “You live.”
Nancy quit her job that evening. She didn’t know why, it was a decent job, and she’d been good at it. But she went home from that tiny van and stared at her second bedroom. White freshly painted walls and wooden floors. There was a single hook on the wall for a painting.

I love them. But mommy says we can’t ‘ford one. Can you ‘ford one? Do you have one? Is it a boy or a girl? What’s his name?” The girl gasped a breath. “I’m Robin. What’s your name? I never saw you before. Are you new? Did you move here? Did a big van take your things here? Did you get to ride in it?”
Nancy was suddenly speechless. What if this girl didn’t like her? What if Nancy wasn’t as good or fun as all her other friends? What if she said the wrong thing?

Just as she took the first step down the stairs, Nancy emerged from her room, hurriedly blurting out “Call me when you get home.” and then shutting the door.
Robin made sure to do just that. There wasn’t much of a conversation, and it quickly became clear that it wasn’t a ‘call me when you get home so we can keep talking’ kind of request. Nancy said thank you, and hung up. And that was it. And Robin was left wondering what went on in her mind.

As bad as choir robes was, picturing himself in a body bag was worse. But accompanying the awful visions was a clock chime - four, to be exact.
