"It was on one of these patrols, the four of them trudging along through the woods around the Creel house, that they encountered the first demogorgon any of them had seen since the gates had opened. All of them stopped in their tracks. Nancy put her hand on her gun. The demogorgon whipped its head around, abandoning the carcass it had previously been devouring. It looked at Will. It still amazed Nancy how it could hold a gaze so fiercely with no eyes. Will was completely frozen to the spot. Nancy could see the fear coming off of him in waves. The demogorgon made a throaty noise, starting as a low rumble and gradually reaching a higher pitch. Curious. Deadly. It would lunge for Will at any second. Nancy did the only thing she could think to do.
She took off running."

Nancy gets a debilitating injury running from a demogorgon and Robin takes care of her while she loses her mind about being useless.

Nancy Wheeler was lying down on the railroad tracks.
That was weird for a lot of reasons, besides the obvious one. It was weird for Robin to see anybody out here at all. It was weird to see Nancy Wheeler anywhere but school. She was born for school, Robin thought. Their school didn't have a uniform but Nancy practically wore one anyway, every day a different pastel cardigan and a skirt landing appropriately below her un-skinned knees. White socks and mary janes. She was wearing jeans and a red corduroy jacket now, though. Sneakers. Her hair was pulled back off her face and she was lying down on the train tracks with her eyes closed.
It was weird.

A goalie can learn a lot about someone’s play from watching them for upwards of ten years. It actually functions as a pretty good empathy-builder— Robin can have a disastrous turnover right in front of the net, but Nancy was there back when she was doing that all the time. Nancy, nowadays, has a well-developed sense of empathy and perspective when it comes to Robin.

Robin's apartment was smaller even than Nancy and Jonathan's had been. The kitchen was just a corner of the living room, and the living room was just a couch and a coffee table and a TV on a TV stand. But it was warm, and the light was warm, and Robin was warm when she pulled Nancy into a clumsy hug, seemingly unaware or just unconcerned about Nancy's own unfamiliarity with the gesture, the closeness, the warmth.
Nancy had spent five years in the Southern California sun, but she had forgotten what actual warmth felt like

Nancy wasn’t someone who was meant to be a sister. She was an independent soul from day one. She’d come into the world kicking and screaming, faced with a society that told her that she had to stick up for herself, because no one else would.
So Mike had been a wrench in her plans. With him came the title of big sister, the expectation to look after a smaller person even when they were dumb and rude and annoying. Nancy never wanted to be a sister, much less a big one, and Mike had gone and messed that up.

Of course she didn’t know what it meant back then, just chalked it up to lucky guesses and quick reflexes—logical and easily explainable. It stopped being simple luck the night she was patrolling with Robin and Will—checking out the location from her most recent vision—and a demodog launched out of the darkness exactly as she had seen in her head. It stopped being a case of basic quick reflexes when that extra breath of time stretched out and slowed down around her until everything was silent and still and she could walk up to the creature and shove her pistol into its gaping maw while it leapt in creeping slow motion towards her friends—towards Robin. She pulled the trigger and it dropped dead to the ground with a hole in the back of its skull before the other two even knew it was there, confused as hell about how Nancy just seemed to shift ten feet to the right instantly. Nancy Wheeler had never really been quite normal, but now she knew it.
