Goodnight looked up from his cards, first at the woman currently perched on his knee and then across the saloon at Billy. Sure enough, Billy was glaring over at them with enough force to wither a cactus. God alone knew what had got him looking so foul-tempered, but as long as it was aimed at him rather than any of the other saloon patrons, Goody wasn't too worried.
He gave the woman a reassuring squeeze around the waist and his most winning smile.
"Don't you mind him, cher, he's only jealous that the prettiest girl in the place has chosen to make a home in my lap."

Summary
Sam saw how it was of course, in a single glance. The way Goody held himself, defiant and tense at Billy’s introduction, the silent way his eyes darted from Billy to the group, to Sam, protective and wary. Sam obviously had the advantage of knowledge, of Goody’s character, of his inclinations, but once you knew the signs were easy to spot.
“That’s how it is, you and him?” he asks later, jutting his chin towards Billy on the other side of the fire and Goodnight’s shakes his head quickly.
“Ain't nothing like that, and he doesn't know a thing about it so don’t go telling tales and giving him ideas either.”
In which Sam, by means of Faraday, basically trolls Billy and Goodnight into confessing their feelings.

Goodnight looked away, cheeks red and saw Billy’s eyes glittering in the firelight, entranced by the play of colours on the other men’s skin. The large tabby cat was sprawled across Billy’s lap, purrs rumbling through the earth as Billy worked his fingers through it’s fur, one of his gloves carefully balanced on his knee. Goodnight wondered if he reached over, if he allowed himself to touch Billy’s skin, if it would bloom the same brilliant gold as soulmates did. -

Billy interrupted himself with a yawn, and Goody shook his shoulder slightly. “Is this going to be a dirty story?” he asked, as Billy was making himself comfortable on Goodnight’s arm, drowsy and sated and lazily contemplating a second round at some point in the future.
“It’s a moral story.” Billy answered. “You think missionaries teach dirty stories at Christmas?”
Goody looked at him. “Remind me and I’ll get a bible and read you some real dirty stories” he said.

The office was quiet, filled with the scent of old paperwork quietly decomposing and burnt coffee, acrid enough to still remain even after what felt like a decade of smelling it.
Billy stared at the paperwork laid out on the desk like a sacrifice on an altar, the words blurring in front of his eyes into an incomprehensible mess. He knew what they said, as it was the same meaningless platitudes that all of the reports contained.

So it's not exactly untrue, the story Goodnight tells about how he wound up in his partnership with Billy Rocks. He really does watch Billy take on a whole redneck bar bare-knuckled and win, though the warrant's a convenient fiction. At this point, they've known each other for ten days, if you count a few hours near silence in the wilderness nine days ago ten days of acquaintance.
