Summary
In the beginning, the author created a story, dragging it into existence from the dust.
It was a story about stars and space and time –– the past, present, and future mingling and pulling souls backwards and forwards through the margins of the world.
But beneath every story, there is another story. There is a hand within the hand. There is the Truth within the Truth.
For the story is also one of a team and their contentions with friendship, and hope, and survival, and wisdom, and pain. In 1914, Vato Falman grapples with exile, evil, and the Crimson Alchemist. In 1910, Kain Fuery's first week at Eastern Command ends in tragedy. In 1900, Heymans Breda encounters a stranger in a place of lost luggage and lost souls. In 1912, Jean Havoc uncovers a horrific secret in the bowels of East City. In 1913, Maes Hughes decodes a warning in the pages of an old book.
And, always, a man... an alchemist doomed to wander the dark causeways of the universe. Stringing memories and moments together like a strand of pearls.

But now the author is old... and the story he once laid out and ruled has been snatched away...

They were always there at the edge of his mind. Her, in a backdrop of green. Her, curled on the couch. Her, hands stained purple from berries picked from the bushes behind her father’s house. He took a pen and paper from his bedside table. He wrote down everything he loved about her. He filled the page.
