"Seriously, Edwin. For a week it was all 'hurray, no more running from Death,'" Crystal flailed sarcastic jazz hands, "And then bam! Overnight, the two of you could barely look at each other let alone work together."
Edwin took in and let out a deep breath. He spoke calmly, surely, "Nothing happened."
"Really?" Crystal didn't even try to fight back the laugh she let out, "Because you two are acting like one of you forgot your thirty-fifth friendiversary."
Edwin's jaw clenched again. He looked again to his book.
"Charles and I have only known each other 34 years."
"That's bullshit," Crystal said and waited for Edwin to look up again. It hardly took a second, interjection primed on his tongue, but Crystal continued before he had the chance to speak, "You two have been best friends for 34 years, but now you're acting like you guys can't stand each other."
Or
Charles and Edwin are fighting, Crystal is dealing with the consequences.

“I would rather get ripped apart than play this game with you,” he spat, letting all of the venom he was capable of sink into his words.
The boy’s face crumpled. It was as if Edwin had somehow found the exact worst thing to say to him, like he’d not only stabbed him but twisted the knife on the way out.
The last thing he saw before he died was the boy, face red from screaming as he reached out for Edwin.
It almost looked like he was sad.
XXXSome unknown events in Hell strip Edwin of his memories, leaving him with no knowledge of the last few decades. Charles is going to save him though, even if he has to drag Edwin out, kicking and screaming.

“Charles? Are you quite alright?”
Charles gasps, and opens his eyes, revealing that they are now tinted a slightly scarlet hue.
Edwin retracts his hand in shock, and Charles whines at its loss. Charles begins reaching for Edwin, those trouble-making hands grasping for his lapels.
Edwin permits the contact, half due to shock, half due to…ulterior motives. Charles’ hands land on his lapels indeed, and he tugs Edwin into his chest, where he wraps the boy into a rather suffocating hug.
“Charles! What is the matter with you?”
“Edwin, Edwin, Edwin-” Charles is mumbling, he sounds feverish.

The rough edges of existence are sanded away until what you have is an idealized version of how things used to be... He was starting to think they weren't actually worth the 35 years of pining now as he violently vomited into the barely functional toilet of their office. The warm hand on his back was nice, but the acid currently coating his esophagus mostly negated the pleasantness. Charles hated to admit it, hot blood flowing through his veins for the first time in three decades, but Edwin might have had a point."
While trying to get Niko back, the spell backfires and now the boys have bodies again...and it's awful. Turns out being sixteen forever is way worse when the sweat, bodily functions, hormones, and uncomfortably timed boners are part of the deal.

He finds Charles in the lounge, strapped into a bouncing chair whilst his mother naps on the sofa. Charles is wide awake, burbling happily as he sucks on a toy, a mop of fine curls already sprouting from his head. His eyes dart around the room and when they land on Edwin, they linger, and he pulls the toy from his mouth and smiles.
Edwin has never been fond of babies, but Charles is the exception to the rule. The smile on his face is not nearly as charming as the one that has Edwin weak at the knees, but it is adorable in a different way entirely.
Charles babbles a stream of nonsense and then throws his toy towards Edwin. It lands on the floor between them and Charles’s face crumples when he realises that it is no longer in reach. Edwin does not think. He steps forward and picks up the toy, crouching down before Charles to press it into his tiny hand.
He does not take it. Instead, his hands reach up to pat at Edwin’s face.

The Cat King titled his head. “So are you. You can’t just go running off into the woods like that. That disgusting little growth could be on any branch or rock or ugh, tree.”
“Exactly!” Edwin said, putting as much heat into his words as he could muster. “Which is exactly why I need to go and warn Charles and Crystal about Monty’s betrayal and Esther’s trap.”
“Not happening,” the Cat King said. He used one finger, the end of it almost looking more like a cat’s claw than a nail, to point at his wrist. “As long as that bracelet is on, you fall into my domain. And I’m not letting something of mine be taken by Esther.”

Aka the Cat King takes Edwin away during the forest scene to protect him from Esther's trap, leading Charles and Crystal to believe he died.
