"Are you sure that we are awake?" Rocky asked. Only, his voice dipped theatrically and he turned to face Mordecai. With one hand braced on the bench seat, beside Mordecai's knee, he leaned close. "It seems to me that yet we sleep, we dream. Do not you think—" reaching into his jacket, Rocky pulled out his flask. "—the duke was here, and bid us follow him?"
Mouth dry, Mordecai pressed himself back against the door. "What?"
Rocky sighed, and uncapped the flask. "My own fault, for forgetting."

"Ahuh," she nodded. "Wrecker and I went out for flatcakes."
Pushing on their goggles, Tech sighed; TAY-0's HUD flashed a storage warning. "I suppose that will have to do," said Tech. "We can grab something more nutritious on our way to the ship."
"What's wrong with flatcakes?" Wrecker asked, scratching his head.
"Nothing, Wrecker," Tech said to their brother. "But growing children require more than gluten and complex sugars."
"What's so complex about it?"
"Nobody cares!" TAY-0 interrupted.

Steve had been sitting behind the counter for ten minutes when he got the first phone call. “Thank you for calling Family Video, this is—”
“Steve!” Dustin shouted. “This is an emergency!”
“No,” Steve replied automatically, shifting in his stool to swipe the slinky someone had left in the lost and found.
“You haven’t even listened to what I have to say!”
“Whatever it is,” Steve rolled his eyes. “I can’t tonight, I have a date.”
“You always have a date,” Dustin groaned. “The fate of the world depends on this!”
For a moment Steve tensed, a familiar sense of unease squirming at the base of his spine. “Like, for real or…?”
There was a pause on the other end.
And Steve relaxed. “This is about dragons and dungeons, isn’t it?”

"Jonathan!" Will lifted his arms but didn't get out of bed. "Eddie picked me up from school!"
"I stole your bike," Eddie added. "Dude, you really need a better lock. Took me no time to get through it."
Jonathan laughed, and took a single step before collapsing across the foot of the bed. He groaned into the blankets.
"How come you didn't tell Eddie it was your birthday?" Will continued.
"Yeah man, not cool," Eddie stretched his legs to push at Jonathan’s side. "I would've got you something."

"Hey, hi," Lucius laughed, a hand trailing through the air. "Isn't this awkward."
"This is where you two have been hiding?" Roach pointed at them, anger bouncing between Lucius and Wee John. "I thought we had an agreement!"
"We do!" Lucius assured Roach. He reached down to pick up a sketchbook, different than the tomb he usually carried around for Captain Bonnet. "We just… lost track of time."
"Lucius is an artist," said Wee John, voice coloured with awe. "You can't rush art."
"Artist?" Roach scoffed.
"Just some sketching," Lucius grinned, wagging his brows as he revealed the freshest page of his book.
"Wait," Frenchie stared at the book. "That wasn't just a line, you actually sketch people?"
—or, five times Frenchie/Lucius didn't happen, and the time it did.

Grandmother ruled Gir Niajra, and always had.
Jummai felt certain this was so, mostly because it was impossible to imagine otherwise: anyone, anyone at all, seated so comfortably on that great golden throne except Grandmother? Anyone who could look or speak with such authority, to whom so many great and worthy people bowed down? No—only Grandmother. It had always been Grandmother, and it always would be.
Then Grandmother died; and there was a war.
(Or: Jummai is a princess without a throne—but she has no intention of leaving to others what is rightfully hers. She needs a wife with an army, and gets one; but her wife seems impervious to her tactical charm, she keeps making mistakes, and her cousin still wants her dead.)
