Two, it always pays to have someone I trust at my back — what if I’m attacked by a wild boar or bees or something? Three, your heavenly standing has dropped because you’re too inactive! You obviously need the merits so, really, I'm doing you a favour by sharing this. Four—"
“Enough,” Ming Yi said because there would be no stopping him otherwise. “This is barely a mission. I’m not doing it.”
“...I’ll treat you to dinner.” At Ming Yi’s pause, Shi Qingxuan quickly added, “Anything you want! All you can eat, no time limit—”
“...Fine,” Ming Yi agreed shortly.

Shi Qingxuan instinctively recoils from the oppressive aura surrounding the Ghost King, which he flares around himself like an unspoken warning, a clear threat. He winces as if burned by ice. It’s getting impossibly hard to breath. A drowning sensation, like water filling up his lungs and squeezing every ounce of air out of them. It takes Shi Qingxuan a moment to realise, that it is actually his very own tears he is chocking on.

“Now can I take Mister Feng away or is the process still a little tricky?” He Xuan asked again.

“I’m still a vampire hunter.” Shi Qingxuan challenges the notion they have that she’s not worth pursuing. “I’ve still killed, and I train every day just like him.”
He Xuan scoffs, the sound echoes harshly through the room. “I’ve decided not to hurt you, are you trying to change my mind?” They ask, and this time their words really do achieve silence from her. “Besides, not all things are equal, if vampire hunters were fish, he’d be a shark and you’d be a koi fish. One is dangerous and the other is just there for decoration.”
Shi Qingxuan’s mouth hangs open in an “o” at the insult. Under normal circumstances, she might have pointed out that this means He Xuan thinks she’s pretty, but this is He Xuan, they have her held hostage, and they are using her to get to her older brother.
In which the Shi family are vampire hunters and He Xuan is a vampire with a grudge against them. He Xuan captures Shi Qingxuan in an attempt to get to her brother, but keeping her hostage leads to some unexpected revelations for them both.

Summary
When photos are sold to the tabloids of Shi Qingxuan inside his gated, secure home, Shi Wudu knows he has to do something to protect his younger brother. He tilts his head up to stare at Black Water, whose mouth presses into a thin line. Black Water squints down at him in return, then stands. The crew members gathered in the room bow their heads, but Shi Qingxuan keeps his stubbornly raised as he stares right into Black Water’s captivating, freakishly golden eyes.
“You aren’t scared?”

When the infamous pirate Black Water Sinking Ships decides to try his luck at kidnapping Shi Qingxuan with the intent of holding him for ransom, nobody expects friendships—nor love—to bloom as a result.
