It's the early '90s. Marty is (mildly) undercover, investigating a case and pounding whiskey and panicking about the steady, settled, regular-type life he swears he wants. Rust is (deep) undercover and wondering if he remembers what it is to want. By chance, they meet.

It’s not the closeness that does it. He gets plenty close to people. Classes come to mind, where the students swap partners as everyone learns new moves. He has to hold dance partners while they jump and twirl and dip, but that’s different. This, with Fran… they’re friends, too.
You can work on a Federation dance forever with a partner, and never get to know them. But the paso doble, the turning point, was different. It wasn’t Federation, and it sure as hell wasn’t impersonal in the way approved moves are. The paso doble demanded soul.
It was different. It was—more.
