Summary
So he was having issues with self image, he thought, plenty of guys go through that. Late in the night, with his gaze trained on the ceiling, Shinji tried to envision himself with the same rugged nature as Toji or Mr. Kaji. He found, quickly, that it did little to soothe him or resolve any of these feelings. Quite the opposite: it felt like someone had gone and punched him in the gut, left a void in his chest and allowed dread to start pooling up inside it.
He tries to comfort himself instead, letting tracks 25 and 26 play idly in his ears, and the lingering memory of his mother fills his mind.
Warm, smooth, inoffensive, delicate.
The opposite of everything he was supposed to be. The opposite of all he was.
At the end of the day, it only upsets him more.

Shinji's issues with self-image begin to go beyond his capabilities as a pilot, and Kaworu thinks his colorful hobbies could be of some use. (Based off Kaworu canonically wanting to be a makeup artist & doing Shinji's makeup in one of the NGE games!)

Skeppy grabbed at his wrist and nodded down, urging the other to look.
He then raised his hand, weakly twirling the diamond in his grasp until it glinted in the dim light.
It was that simple action. Without words, Bad understood.

Snufkin is having great trouble properly letting Moomintroll know how he feels, but luckily for him, Little My graciously comes to the rescue and helps Snufkin confess!
“Hrrmm....” Little My laid down, looking up at the cloudy sky for a couple moments. “You can choose to help in any way you desire; I just—need help,” Snufkin said, scratching the back of his neck.
“What if I can't think of any favor right now? ”
“Then you can come up with something later; I'll owe you.”
“Alright! ” Little My sat back upright and extended her paw out to the boy. “You've got a deal, pal.”

Yoshiki kept his head down and stared at his clasped hands, struggling to stay present. The 5:30 morning train to the prefecture’s capital had been the earliest one they could find.
“Hey,” Hikaru whispered from beside him, “you think this plan will work?”
Yoshiki frowned, pressing down on his knuckles with his fingers. Despite wearing a long sleeved shirt, his newest gnarly scar was clearly visible on his hand, covering most of it. He still couldn't get used to it. “If it doesn’t, we’re both as good as dead, so…”

When the mysterious company makes a move against Hikaru, he and Yoshiki are forced to flee Kubitachi, becoming a part of a plan that isn't even their own. Blindly putting their trust in Tanaka and accepting his help, the two run off to Tokyo. Things don't go how they expected. Both boys are forced to survive in an unknown environment as Hikaru is being hunted, keeping secrets from each other (and themselves) while struggling with inner turmoil.
Underneath it all, what keeps them going is their quest for acceptance and understanding.
