Summary
Jon hadn’t anticipated just how quiet it would be at Daisy’s cottage. He definitely hadn’t anticipated how that quiet settles something inside of him, like balm on an injury he didn’t know he had. He’d thought the lack of human presence would make him more aware of the loss still sitting in the pit of his stomach, heavy and solid, but it’s … it’s nice to have the space to process things. To know that he’s currently alone by choice, not by happenstance, and that he has the freedom to just be. Jon lets the solitude envelop him like a weighted blanket, warm and comfortable and safe.
It’s a few days later when he first meets the man who pets the cows.

Following the loss of his grandmother, Jon takes a sabbatical and moves up to northern Scotland to stay in Daisy's cabin and study the religious culture of the village near it. There, he meets Martin, his apparent and unwanted neighbor who makes odd jokes and seems to exist solely to ruin Jon's attempts at finally getting some peace and quiet. But as Jon spends more time with Martin, he begins to warm up to him and, as time goes on, to fall in love with him.
It just takes him a bit to realize that the man he's fallen in love with is a god.

“What--” He stops to compulsively lick his lips. His back hits the wall-- he’d started backing up at some point and he hadn’t noticed. He can’t tear his eyes away from the man on his couch. No. The creature. “What are you?”
Martin finally looks up from his book. He looks at Jon. He doesn’t look like Prentiss. He isn’t full of gaping holes that should have killed him, he isn’t covered in squirming, shiny white worms, he doesn’t smell like a moldy, rotting corpse. He looks like a pleasant, normal man. He has freckles scattered across the bridge of his nose, his cheeks. Monsters shouldn’t have freckles, Jon thinks nonsensically.
“I’m your boyfriend,” the monster sitting on his couch says, as if this is a matter that is not up for debate, that Jon has no say in.

Martin can see the way that Jon's hands shake, and the dark bruises around his eyes. He notices the jitters and the skipped meals and the way that Jon is first in the Archives in the morning, and last out at night, assuming he ever leaves.
It can't go on. And Martin thinks that he might have a solution.

Bored and just a tad awkward, he looks to the cream walls decorated with family portraits.
They’re all dressed more or less the same—the women in dresses, the children in frocks, the men in trousers. The smiles are fake, the eyes are vacant. Marvin can just picture the awkward moment that these photos encase—some old, overweight shrew telling them to “Smile for the camera!” as they cling to one another just like they cling to the idea of happiness as a nuclear family. Marvin feels a sick sense of satisfaction that at least he’s not the only one pretending.

This is partially inspired by this (https://soundcloud.com/ericwhitacre/winter) choral piece composed by Eric Whitacre, the text of which is taken from a poem by Edward Esch, quoted at the beginning of each chapter. Each chapter is, in turn, inspired by a different section of the piece.
