“FEDRA Military Preparatory has an opening for guaranteed two weeks of work,” the official replies, “pays twenty cards a day.”
Joel arches an eyebrow skeptically. “What’s the catch? Good pay and guaranteed two weeks of work, and nobody wants it?”
“Not a lot of people want to work with the kids,” FEDRA guy says nonchalantly, “they’re a sad sight.”
Joel blinks. “The kids are workin’ the job?”
Shit, it’s gotta be a breeze job if they got the little rats doin’ it. Guaranteed good pay for two weeks and a lighter load? It’s a bit tempting.
“It’s all I’ve got for today,” says the official, ignoring his question, “take it or leave it.”
Against his better judgment, Joel says, “I’ll take it.”

Well, theoretically it starts before Ellie can even remember. Apparently as a kid, Ellie was a biter from hell.
Ironic in the world she grew up in.
It’s not something she really thinks about. Hell, there used to be times with Riley where they’d sit on one of their beds and read or work or whatever, and if Riley’s arm or hand or, once, ankle, was close enough, Ellie would gnaw on it as a joke until they ended up on the floor, wrestling.
So, whatever. Some people love with gentle words and little gifts and some people bite.

Ellie plays with his fingers. Joel’s got long fingers, scarred and strong. His hands are clean, his nails clean and trimmed too, which is nice. The skin is rough and calloused and a little dry, but they’re warm and they’re steady and they’ve cleaned blood from Ellie’s skin, they’ve braided her hair, they’ve killed men who were going to hurt her, they’ve cradled Ellie’s face in attempts to calm her down, and most importantly they hold Ellie whenever she so requests it.
