Summary
The story you are about to read has been told many times, including by myself. Rewrite of Picking up the Pieces by myself.
The lawsuit is done, Buck is back at work, it'll take time, but everything will return to normal eventually, right? The firehouse crew is hurt, and Buck is struggling. He starts to spiral, going back to his old habits, with no one there to see or catch him. How long can he last on the downward trajectory? Or will someone notice before it's too late?
i.e Buck struggles with his mental health and relationships following a lawsuit against his fire department.
I'm bad at summaries. Just your typical post-lawsuit fic. Updates once a week, either Friday or Saturday.

“Buck?” he said softer now, approaching him again and reaching his hands out as if he were approaching a cornered animal. “What happened?” he asked as one of his hands cupped the side of Buck’s face, a thumb swiping away the blood.
Buck seemed to curl in on himself then, his entire body recoiling and his face taking on a look of shame.
“I’m fine,” he said, voice cracking.
“You’re not,” Eddie countered, removing his hand just because he couldn’t stand the look in Buck’s eyes in that moment. “Talk to me.”
“It’s nothing,” he said too quickly, then pushed past him and headed toward the showers.
“Buck, it’s not nothing,” Eddie said, following behind him at what he considered to be a safe distance. “It’s two in the morning and it’s your day off. You show up here looking like someone just killed your puppy and sucker-punched you. Will you please talk to me?”
“Will you just let me take a shower?” Buck asked, stopping in place for a moment. “Please.”

Strong hands grab him from behind, holding him upright. “Eds?” Buck asks, which is dumb. Eddie isn’t there. Eddie is pissed that Buck went out tonight with another stranger.
“Luca.” A gruff voice corrects gently. “I believe your date may have slipped something in your drink while you stepped away from the table.” Buck glances at the stranger with blurry eyes and then frowns back at Rachel.

“Okay, we’re far enough out.” Gunman shouts to his companion. The boat immediately slows to a stop. The waves rock it as it starts to idle. The gunman and his companion turn to stare at their captives. “We just needed to make sure we got away clean.”
“This is your stop.” The second man says and motions with his hand off the side of the boat.
“You don’t have to do this.” Bobby says calmly.
“We don’t have to.” The gunman says, sounding bored. “But we want to.” The man moves closer and points his gun between Buck’s eyes. “Now. Get in the water.”

To them, hate was too strong a word and an even stronger feeling. Hatred implied a level of interest towards him that neither of them had ever been able to manage. It suggested they thought about him or cared enough about his life and what he did with it to feel something more. Neither of them could so much as feign the sort of interest needed to form such a strong opinion of him.

He asks, shaking his head. "Why does everyone keep asking me that? It's an inanimate object." Buck complains, gesturing with his free hand.Bucks parents hid his classification to try and save Daniel. Now the secret is out and you know what they say about the road to hell. It's paved with good intentions.
