It's Jonny's first year at Abingdon, and Colin keeps forcing him to hang out with his older friends. It's not that Jonny doesn't like Colin's friends, he does--especially a certain someone--he's just afraid to embarrass himself in front of Colin's friends. Meanwhile Colin is developing feelings for Ed. Thom is busy trying to play the supportive role to the only friend who really understands him, while he hides his true feelings for Colin.
Basically, Colin's falling hard for Ed, Thom is secretly in love with Colin, and Jonny--even though he'd never admit it--has feelings for Thom.

Children don’t die. Maybe it’s because we’ve warped our minds to believe the pure innocence of youth is impenetrable by death, and the idea that such an innocent being can face the misery of death is frankly depressing. Or maybe it’s because we’ve closed our eyes to the atrocities of this world because doesn’t it really matter when it’s not you? Or maybe it’s because god really is real and all loving and hangs around children peering over their shoulders to make sure the grim reeper never comes and builds his house within a thousand feet of them. Oh wait no that’s sex offenders.
