Max’s head whips to find Steve leaning against the doorway, hands deep in the pockets of his khakis and his ankles crossed casually, like he hangs out in this funeral home all the time.
“Oh.” She clears her throat. “Hey. Asshole.”
“If you’re trying to hide, you might want to shut the door,” he says, stepping inside and lightly pushing the door until it clicks shut. The room feels so much smaller.
“I didn’t want to freak anyone out.”

Summary
As their kiss deepens, Steve goes to reach for Eddie's hair, and freezes as the black bandana around his wrists binds them together. Eddie smiles against his lips and leans back to whisper, "What'cha trying to do there, Stevie?"
Steve's heart stutters in his chest. He can feel goosebumps starting to form on his arms as Eddie pushes them above his head, wrists still bound, and presses himself back to Steve's chest and continues to kiss him. Steve tries to focus on Eddie's lips, on Eddie's hands cradling his face, even though he can feel the fabric binding his wrists together and the way they press against each other, his pulse seemingly magnified by the dual pounding of each artery, and it's fine, it's okay, he can focus on Eddie and the faint smell of laundry detergent and cigarettes, and Eddie's weight in his lap, and Steve is fine.

Eddie doesn’t like showing it when he’s scared. Wayne always knows, though. He knew every time Eddie appeared on his doorstep with no warning, small and trembling with a dirty, oversized backpack packed with snacks and worn stuffed animals. He knew when Eddie was taller, a little bit too skinny and too tough for his age, when his dad finally ended up in prison and the government finally let Wayne's kid be his kid. He knew when Eddie was in middle school, friendless and angry and paranoid, when Wayne stumbled upon a stash of porno mags while he was looking for drugs.
So he knows now.

Lucas thinks that he’ll calm down once Eddie is back on his feet. Max thinks that he’s being a selfish little drama queen, but she doesn’t really have a leg to stand on when it comes to self-pitying bullshit, so she’s been biting her tongue.
“That doesn’t mean it’s okay to… talk to Steve like that. Like he’s stupid.”
“Well…” Max tries to joke, and El glares. “Sorry.”
“You were not helping.”
Max puts down her hairbrush. She’s… maybe also been weird. Since everything.

Soon after Billy had beat him down, the ache migrated. Steve decided to put off dealing with it.
One day, not long after the Russian torture session, Dustin was talking to Steve as he flitted around the kitchen, preparing dinner. He noticed as he turned, he could no longer hear Dustin when he turned one way.

“Are you sure this is okay?” Steve asks in an undertone once everyone has arrived that first night. He looks genuinely nervous, which is… insane; he’s a bat-wielding, bat-biting jock who saved the world, and Eddie’s just – “I don’t think your friends like me very much.”
Eddie feels the corners of his mouth draw down as he follows Steve’s eyeline to where the others are huddled in the corner talking amongst themselves.

He knew he shouldn't be driving, of course he knew that.
But he was better now. Stronger. The headaches were less frequent, and he hadn't had any dizzy spells this week aside from the typical vertigo that followed him whenever he woke up, or turned his head too fast.
Plus, it was late. The roads were empty, dark stretches of pavement with no other cars in sight. No one to hit, no one to swerve around.
Just Steve and the yellow lines on the road and the knowledge that Dustin needed help.
