He looked torn, glancing uneasily between Zhen Ruyu’s freshly blood-spotted bandages and Gu Miaomiao’s transformed face. Closer to the door, Zhou Zishu shushed the child beside him with a touch. Zhen Yan closed his mouth, looking up trustingly.
They couldn’t be that far apart in age, but A-Yan had yet to hit his growth spurt. A new shidi. While Siji Pavilion had many unranked disciples, several of whom were far older than Zishu, as the First Disciple, everyone had to address him as shixiong. The situation had always felt laughable to Zishu, even now—how could he have people who were twice his age address him respectfully as ‘shixiong’? With A-Yan, it wasn’t so odd. Looking down at A-Yan’s soft round face, Zishu swore quietly to protect him forever.

Summary
Zhang Chengling knows he hasn’t been dealt the best hand in life, but he’s content where he is now. Living with Zhou Zishu is comforting in a way Chengling cannot describe and could not have imagined back when he was still being shuffled from uncle to uncle. He’s comfortable here--happy, even.
Chengling doesn’t have much to complain about these days. In fact, the only issue troubling him is the increasingly evident realization that his adoptive father’s house husband is an actual mobster.

The one in white working through a mountain of dishes had a heavy broadsword with an ornate hilt resting against the table beside him, while the other in shades of white and red fanned himself, drinking wine. Zhou Zishu watched from the stairway, bemused. After escorting Zhang Chengling to the Yueyang Sect, he’d been out of sorts. In the end, he’d resorted to old habits, changing out of his beggar’s outfit and mask, lingering around town to indulge a few curiosities. Heaven knew that there were many of those with the Heroes’ Conference so close.
