Summary
They slow as they turn into the parking lot for an apartment building Arasha assumes is Angela’s. She hasn’t been over since she moved. She actually doesn’t remember if she’s ever been to Angela’s apartment for a one-on-one hangout before, even at the old place—she’s maybe never hung out with Angela one-on-one outside of work, period. Did Angela think this through? Will she regret this in twenty minutes and Arasha will have to figure out the signals on the fly? What’s she thinking?
Shifting to park, Angela looks over at her. “Are people who are allergic to nuts allergic to pine cones?”

“All good?” Mel asked, tentative.
“Yep.” Trinity did not lift her forehead from the tabletop.
“Oh, cool. Because you, um, look really thrilled.”
That made Trinity roll her head to the side, her temple pressed to the corner of the mousepad, which let her peer at Mel. Her cheek squished in a way that was oddly cute. “Oh, yeah?”

“I know it’s too late, because there’s nothing we can explain, but her parents don’t want her to see her sister, so I thought… If it were us. I would– I couldn’t handle it if–” A muscle in Mel’s jaw jumped. “I thought maybe she could say goodbye?”
Swallowed tears burned the back of Heather’s throat. Her belly twisted. She rolled her lips between her teeth, trying to find words. “I think so, too.”

“So, can I ask—what inspired the change?” Helen took the mixture of developer and bleach and began to apply it.
“Honestly?”
“’Course.”
“If one more person told me how much I looked like my mother, I was going to go full Sylvia Plath and find myself the nearest oven.”

“You’re here,” Mary spits. She’s too dehydrated for tears—face peeling, lips cracked—but her voice grates like a rusty saw against bone. “You were dead, and you’re here. I was dead, and I’m here. Tell me why she wouldn’t fucking be here!”
Lilith says nothing. Lilith can’t say anything that Mary doesn’t already know.
Lilith can only stare at her, expression bludgeoned and splintered. They used to be three; then they were four; then they were five; now they are two. Shannon is gone.

Summary
This, sitting in the Peaches’ living room with her second baseman’s skirt in her lap and her shortstop as a witness, feels different than all of it. This is more than a practical responsibility or a childhood chore. She doesn’t have to do it. There’s no expectation for it, kindly or nagging.
There’s just a needle, and thread, and a hot butch watching over her shoulder. The press of Jess’s gaze charges every stitch.
And, well. How else does Lupe spend her time, if not showing off repetitive, perfectionistic hand movements?

Lupe snorts at that. She meets Esti’s eyes, a smirk peeking through. More moments have been happening like this since Esti crashed the car, moments that remind them both of joking around in the bathroom that first night.
Esti sees, and, sensing it means she’s that much closer to winning her over, grows a smile of her own. “You see? Tampoco puedes soportar otra noche de…meatloaf.”
Lupe tips her head to the side, scrunching her eyes. To Jess, she says, “Shit, she has a point. Pinche meatloaf.”

“Oh my god.”
“Grace!”
“Sorry,” she offers, bright eyes liquid in the dim light, mouth split in a cheek-aching smile.
“Oh, sure you are, you cow.”

“I’ll stay with her,” Mary says, before Ava can find the mettle to argue. “You can have my bed.”
“I can’t take your bed, Mary–” She glances at Lilith. “And–”
“I did not take you to a pool just so you could immediately throw it away on the couch,” Lilith says, dry. “I can manage the pull out.”
Ava blinks, for a moment. There’s a joke, there, somewhere, part of her brain promises. She can make that about an actress and a bishop, somehow.

Beatrice snorts, a gross, amused snort. She rests her head back down. “Are you saying I’m not good?”
“No, you’re so good, you’re– I mean– You’re good. You’re the best.”
“I’m the best,” Beatrice repeats. Her cheek smushes into the pillow. “And I have chickenpox.”
“Yeah,” Ava agrees. “You do. And I’m sorry, but I think it’s really gonna suck.”

“No, but really, this is Esther Warner. She made the Gates of Anara! What am I gonna say?”
Clance raised her eyebrows. “You say ‘hello.’ You say ‘great to meet you.’ You say ‘your work is amazing.’ You shouldn’t say, ‘we have the same type of magic and I’ve been secretly obsessed with you for the last five years, ever since I picked up a random necklace for my dear and incredible best friend Clance–”
“Alright–”
“–and I lost my whole mind over the ‘complexity and flair of both the magic and metalwork,’ though you could, because it’s, like, embarrassingly accurate. Enough that I memorized your word choice, and I definitely was not trying to. Also, that’s more of a me level of rambling? You do better when you say less.”
Max frowned. “Rude? I think?”

“Lupe,” Ian shouted, “behind you!”
Lupe hardly had time to widen her eyes before a snowball drilled into her ass. It stung straight to the bone.
Cameron shrieked, splattered in proximity. Annis whooped.
Lupe whirled, her mouth open in disbelief.
Across the marbled expanse, she saw Jess’s tongue poking between her teeth.

“I met your catcher,” Max says conversationally, a couple minutes later. She has a slow, lilting measure to her speech that makes the words in Lupe’s mouth feel harsher and grittier by comparison. “White girl who looks like she saw a bus for the first time yesterday?”
Lupe rolls her eyes. “That’s her.”
“So she’s what’s got up your ass?”
“Stuck her hand way up there,” Lupe confirms. “And she’s still doing signals.”
Or: Max befriends Lupe instead of Carson.

Esti widens her eyes at Jess in frustration.
Jess runs her tongue over her teeth. “How long’s it been hurting?”
“Listen, it’s no big deal, it’s–”
“Didn’t ask how big a deal it was. Asked how long it’s been hurting.”

Maggie can’t stop the smile from spreading across her face. “You’re a bad influence.”
“Nah. Teasing your siblings is like an obligation of having them.”
“I’m gonna be honest, that doesn’t sound totally healthy to me.”
“That’s ‘cause you’re an only child. Trust me, I grew up with four of them. Teasing is like nature’s way of preventing murder. It lets off steam without causing critical bodily harm.” Amelia tips her head to the side. “Usually.”
“So if you weren’t teasing Mer, you’d be killing her?”
“No,” she denies. Then: “I’m too young and pretty to go to prison.”
or: Maggie and Amelia take a road trip down to LA. Set in very early Season 12.

She huffs. “Fine. Let’s see, uh, I resent my girlfriend and love her at the same time. I’m terrified that there’s something wrong with me, that I’m a monster who’s gonna hurt everyone I care about. I think I’m going through some kind of trauma response after Spring Break that I don’t want to dig into, but it’s making my mood shitty. And, cherry on top, my god’s ashamed of me.”
It feels good to say it so bluntly. To someone who has no skin in this game, no feelings tied up in it one way or the other.
Aelwyn whistles. "Woof."
