At first, Shadow doesn't reply. Then, finally, he lets out a heavy sigh. “Fine,” he concedes, much to Sonic's swift and immediate delight. “But only because I know you won't stop pestering me until I agree.”
“Yes!” Sonic fist pumps. Victory is his! Somehow, he's more thrilled about this than he usually is about beating Shadow in their races. “I knew you'd say yes! How about Friday? Does 6.30 sound good? Great!”
He's so caught up in the excitement that it isn’t until later, when he gets back home, that he realizes: what are his brothers going to think about this?

"You mean Shadow?" It's a silly question, really— What other hedgehogs do they know? Still, the echidna nods.
"Yes. Him. And while I am admittedly uninformed when it comes to hedgehog courting rituals..” Knuckles pauses, and Tails offers him an encouraging thumbs up. “... The fox and I have reason to believe that the two of you have been engaging in said rituals. Or, perhaps… This planet’s equivalent.”

Sonic is struck with grief in the wake of Shadow's sacrifice. Shadow, in his truest form—his pain, his honor, the good in his heart—is Sonic's little secret. The world isn't ready. Nobody would understand, not even his own family. Sonic is more than ready to shoulder the burden.
But Shadow's not dead.
It doesn't take long for he and Sonic to fall into their awkward little tango. Midnights spent sneaking into the Wachowski household lends well to forming a strong, indestructible bond, and it's only natural that, over the course of it all, two hedgehogs fall in love.
Title comes from the song Hunter by Paris Paloma, which played at the theater before my second viewing of Sonic 3, and now is a song I associate wholly with sonadow. Haha, whoops!
