Wylan knew all too well how to play with fire—as a chemist, as a tanner’s apprentice, as his father’s son, he had to be familiar with it—but this was a new kind of risk, leaving his heart exposed on the damp cobblestones to be stomped on. It was idiotic, he knew, to intentionally let himself be wounded in the Barrel. Things tended to get infected here, and people preyed on weakness like sharks.
But he had been alone, been lonely, for so many years, long before he’d emerged from a freezing canal and found himself at the bottom of the Barrel.
