“We’re called guardians,” Kuro says. “Over time, people have had different names for us, but it really all comes back to that. We’re shifters, shaper-changers… the name doesn’t really matter. What does is that we’re supposed to keep the two kinds of magical forces in the world balanced.” He rattles this off with a roll of his eyes, as though it’s something he’s heard many times over.
Kenma thinks back to the curling snake made of shadows, to Sugawara’s words: People who shine brightly attract a lot of darkness.
“Shadows and light,” he says, not quite a question.
Kuro nods approvingly. “Basically, yeah. There’s a bit more to it than that—shadow magic is born of independence, of isolation and loneliness. Light magic is connections, the relationships between people. Most people have a low dose of both, go through their entire lives not realizing there’s magic in the world.”
“But not you,” Kenma prompts.
“Unfortunately.”

”Hyung,” Hongjoong mumbles into his comforter. He's probably getting drool all over it. Seonghwa hums in response, prompting Hongjoong to continue. "You'd make someone really happy, y'know? If you were in one of those silly rom-coms you like to watch, you would be the hot one who helps the disaster guy get his life back together."
"You're saying that I'm the hot one?" Seonghwa clarifies. Hongjoong almost wants to say no, because right now, there's a sliver of moonlight shining across Seonghwa's face and he doesn't look hot—he looks beautiful. The pale light brings out the silvery colour Seonghwa had dyed his hair last month and it contrasts so beautifully against his tanned skin.
"Yeah," Hongjoong says around a lump in his throat. He doesn't mean to blurt out his next words. "And I'm the disaster."
Hongjoong has always been afraid of flying too close to the sun.
But the stars don’t burn him in the same way.
