Regulus Black tried. He really, really did.
But in the end, what could he do against the voices and the urges and the perpetually present hole inside of his chest, how could he fight it? He wasn't that strong.
So he was eight, then twelve, then seventeen and then he gave up. That's what he always did, according to his mother and father. Sirius could tell them differently, but he wasn't there. He hasn't been for a long time.
And Regulus was tired.
(Or, Regulus Black goes to a mental institution broken, unloved and as a result of actions he only remembers bits and pieces of.)
