“You asshole,” Naruto replied habitually, the weight of his words nonexistent in comparison to the gentleness and strength of his tone. “No I… just have been thinking…that I think I am like my mom sometime, you know?”
And it was vulnerable enough for him to swallow down that old grief and nostalgia he felt develop inside of his throat. He chuckled it away into the sheets. “Not like I have much material to compare myself to her but,” Naruto forced a small laugh, “I could tell she loved Dad a lot. She was so...devoted to him? And he was sacrificial for her, too, right?” Naruto worded it in a way as if Sasuke had an idea what his parents were like, and yet, he also knew Sasuke’s heart well enough that he was comparing his own dead parents’ love to Naruto’s. “He protected her too, apparently. At least that’s what mom told me.”
Sasuke’s hand was steady and firm on Naruto, protective almost, even when Naruto technically didn’t need it. He couldn’t remember a time where he had felt protected when he had always been the one to protect after Sasuke had left the village.
