Jonathan realized things with Nancy weren’t going to work because he constantly felt out of place. Like the wrong variable in a math equation; he didn’t complete the function. He didn’t fit. But with Steve… Jonathan couldn’t shake the feeling that Steve fit. Like a glove. Like a warm jacket. Like the borrowed pack of Joyce’s cigarettes in his back pocket; something he couldn’t quit even if he tried. The whole thing made Jonathan dizzyingly nauseous if he thought about it for too long.

“I’m Steve.” The boy says. He’s still got Eddie’s hand in his, and Eddie notices that the boy- Steve- has soft hands, softer hands than he’d expect just from looking at him.
“I’m- um- I’m Eddie.”
Eddie drops Steve’s hand and rubs the back of his neck with it. He’s lucky he didn’t break it, with the angle that he fell at. His elbows and shoulder sting, but he’s glad they took the brunt of it. Uncle Wayne would fucking kill him if he wound up in the hospital the first day of summer break.
“Nice wipeout, Eddie.” Steve says, flashing another smile. It lights up his whole face. Eddie has a brief thought that this Steve was made to look like that. To have happiness permanently etched on his face. It’s a strange thought. But Eddie had always been a little odd, his mother said so herself. So he lets the thought pass through him, lets it evaporate in the warm summer air.

Look, it’s not like Mike has a problem with gay people. Obviously, he couldn’t care less if Eddie was gay, or if Steve had suddenly decided that playing for the other team might get him a better chance at a home run. It’s not Mike’s business. It’s not his problem. Their relationship was their relationship, and that was that. Who cares if they were both guys?
This is what he tells himself, at least. He pretends like the sour feeling in his stomach is the result of the unidentifiable number of drinks he’s had, and totally not because Steve Harrington is holding hands with Eddie fucking Munson. Or the way Eddie’s hands look entwined with Steve’s. Calloused, strong, scarred. Nothing like his own hands. Nothing like Will’s.

For a while it got easier, through brute-force avoidance and then moving across the country, thousands of miles away from anyone who felt like a real person.
But then you come back―of course you do―and it’s worse than you could’ve ever imagined, because you’re faced with the reality of it.
The reality of Nancy, who says they’ll just have to put off Emerson by a year or two and leaves no room for argument. Jonathan lives in her house, for fuck’s sake, and he’d be hard-pressed to remember the last time they touched that didn’t involve them both going for the salt shaker at the same time.
But there are worse things than Nancy. Something he can no longer avoid.
Because he isn’t actually an eternal eleventh grader, coiled and ready to strike in the back alley of every dream Jonathan has had for four years.
