Mike and Will are taken by the military who take a special interest in Wills powers. While Will is subject to experimentation, Mike does everything he can to keep Will safe.

"Will!" Mike crashes to the ground next to him. Gets a good look at him.
Wills eyes are dazed slightly. They latch on to Mike anyways and he seems to sag with relief. The blood from Wills nose falls onto his lip. Into his mouth.
"That was- that was amazing!" Mike brings his sleeve up and wipes the blood away. He opens his arms and lets Will collapse against him, head resting on Mikes chest and Mike doesn't even think twice about how intimate it should feel.

He knows, it’s all his fault. He knows. But there are tears stinging in his eyes and he calls Will again, because how the hell is he supposed to figure this out on his own? He calls again, and again, and again, and again, until Will picks up.
“Mike. Let it go. It’s almost morning, you should sleep. Why can’t you do as I ask and not call me?”
Mike swallows, voice coming out as a pathetic croak, “Will. Will, I can’t lose you. I can't-” The tears that have been burning in his eyes impatiently, finally roll down his cheeks in fat, slow, drops.

Will needs time away from Mike, time to focus on college and time to get over his unrequited feelings. For the first time, Mike is not the one to push Will away and he cannot stand the feeling. He ends up calling Will, even though he asked him not to, desperate to get him back. It's not too late, is it?

In 1993, 4 years after the Graduation of Hawkins High’s class of 89’…
Holly Wheeler still thinks about her abduction six years prior. Everyone seems to have forgotten what had happened to her, expecting her to have moved on. All she has are Derek and Debbie, but it doesn’t help. She wants a role model, and Will Byers could be just that.
Will Byers is living a happy life in New York City, along with an old “friend” from his high school years. He still gets nightmares of Henry. He can’t help but think about how easily he could’ve be the next Vecna.
Mike Wheeler is currently an aspiring author who writes about the stories he once lived, but he’s still living with his family in Hawkins, and is dull and unhappy. His friends have all separated, and he is drowning in guilt from the mistakes he made in high school.
So he tries to reunite with Will, only to find out he might just be too late.

Summary
Will Byers goes missing on the night of November 6th after a game of DnD with his best friends. No one sees it coming, and everyone except for his closest family and friends are sure he’s got to be dead.
There are no lights to speak to, but there are demodogs to kill, and a bald girl in the woods. Mike is sure they lead to Will, even when he’s missing much longer than just a week or two.
Bob dies for a reason, even if he doesn’t know it, and that is to save Will. What no one expects is for Will to show up in the very building after murdering said monsters with the same powers as Eleven. It becomes increasingly clear that he doesn’t know what’s going on, and neither do they, although for very different reasons.
