Zuko’s head hung even lower. He wasn’t here for his father and he certainly wasn’t here for his soulmate. Zuko had made peace a long time ago with the fact that whoever his soulmate was would hate him. Zuko’s blue eyes meant that his soulmate was Water Tribe, but what Water Tribe member would love a Fire National. A Fire Prince at that. “I’m offering myself willingly as a prisoner,” he said.
“Willing or not, you are indeed a prisoner,” the chief replied. “And whatever you know, I will know soon.” He waved his hand again and the men behind Zuko moved closer. “Take him to the prison.” In a quieter tone, the chief said to one of the men now hauling Zuko to his feet, “Make sure Prince Sokka doesn’t hear a word of this.”

Oh. Okay, yeah, she did not expect this. Maybe she should have, but it goes against literally everything she’s been told about Zuko, nothing any magazine has ever written has ever even implied-
She’s thinking too hard, clearly. “Six wives,” Zuko says, tone dull, “and I’m gay. Truly a feat, isn't it?”
“You’re gay?”
Zuko ignores her embarrassing statement of the obvious. “I think I spent my whole life loving him."

Sokka’s head snapped over to Zuko, who looked just as shocked as Sokka felt. His cheeks were cherry-red and he had a hand clapped over his mouth. “Did you just laugh?” Sokka asked. Just to make sure his ears still worked.
Zuko spluttered, his cheeks darkening. “What—no! Why would I ever—I mean, what is laughing?” And then, “Your jokes suck anyway!”
OR
Sokka accidentally makes Zuko laugh during one of their fights. He takes it upon himself to continue making Zuko laugh in their future encounters, just as a "distraction tactic."

Summary
He was caught on one word that Sokka had said. Engaged. His mind latched onto that, and conjured up images of rings and a wedding. Marriage.
Sokka kept talking, but Zuko couldn’t hear him over the blood roaring in his ears. If he had been engaged to marry an American citizen, he wouldn’t have to go back to Japan and wait to refile for another work visa. He could stay here, and never have to see his father again.
Zuko’s gaze roamed over Sokka. He wasn’t married, or seeing anyone, Zuko knew that. Sokka always complained about being single, and the one time he had gone on a date in their past several years of working together, Sokka hadn’t shut up about it for a week. Zuko would know if Sokka was currently seeing anyone, and he wasn’t.
There it was. His way out.
aka Zuko and Sokka decide to get fake married so Zuko doesn't get deported, but they have to go through a weekend in Sokka's hometown pretending to be a couple for his family before they can do it

By the cliff, in a far off corner in the Ember Islands, there stands a sprawling manor, its empty hallways leading into empty rooms, wooden floors unwalked for decades, left to gather dust and sand, warmed by the sun and soothed by the moon. It stands as it’s done for centuries before, alone and untouched. Windows opened by storms, salt air filling the negative space left by its owners, unbothered.
The tides rise and fall, day after day, and all the while, the Royal Holiday House sleeps, alone and untouched, and thus, it dreams.

or, a year after the war, Zuko brings everyone back to his beach house in Ember Island. Half a century later, Mako is dragged into exploring a haunted house by the beach.
Two days, two sets of people. They're still too young for what they had to do.
