Summary
Killua is alone, packing books into boxes in Leorio’s study when a letter flutters to the ground as gently as the snow falls outside. He picks it up, paying it no mind until he sees rounded letters spelling out his name. His curiosity is peaked so he contorts a single fingernail into a sharp point and cleanly tears open the top of the envelope.
'Dear Killua,' it starts and Killua’s stomach drops. He reads the first few lines before he has to take a break and sit down. Sure there’s been second hand hellos, Christmas and birthday notes, and stories exchanged of Gon over the years but nothing like this. Nothing so direct. Nothing so raw.

Kuroko’s voice was even, but something was audibly off, Kagami picked up. “Hello Kagami-kun.” A beat of silence. “Do you have a moment to talk?”
Kagami made the mental note to switch to Japanese when speaking with Kuroko even though it had been years since he lived in Japan. “Sure, what’s up?”
“I’m not entirely sure how to phrase this,” Kuroko started. “How did you adjust your first time coming to America?”

That got something out of George. He blinked, head slightly tilted. “Pardon?”
“Divination. I forgot what culture—something old. I watched something about it on a flight. They would disembowel an animal and poke at the guts—the intestines, whatever else—and read…” He couldn’t think of the word in English and gave up with a shrug. “You know what I mean. The future.”
“Omens,” George said almost mechanically.
“Yes, omens.” Max nodded. “So what omens have you received?”
“That I’m well and truly fucked, aren’t I."
Montreal, after the race. Max finds George in the Mercedes garage at one in the morning, standing in the entrails of a car that should have won.
Max has never believed in divine will or luck.

Summary
Max is a prodigy, a champion, she drinks beer and tells the journos to fuck off when she doesn’t like the questions they ask. She fits in with the rest of the guys like a fish in water.
George isn’t like that.
She’s had to fight her way through the ranks to get where she is now, had to bankrupt her dad and claw until her nails bled so someone would take a chance on her. She still doesn’t have a title, barely has the respect of the fans.
She doesn’t fit in with the girlfriends, too intense about racing, but she doesn’t fit in with the guys either, too feminine or too prissy or too try-hard. Max is aggressive enough to get away with it, whenever George tries to lean into the masculinity of the sport she just looks like a bitch.
