Three shots ring out.
Steve hears them before he feels them; a warm, wet pain burning in his torso, intolerably excruciating.
There’s a bundle of squawks and screams, outbursts of panic and anger, and it’s only when Hopper falls forwards to take Steve up into a slightly rough, protective hold, does he realize that two of those shots have lodged themselves in his own flesh and bone. (Realizes that he’d moved, instinctively, to shield El, despite never having spoken to her, who’d the gun had been so precisely pointed at, aimed for.)
Steve Harrington watches his own blood pool and trickle over a series of hands pressed against him, small and large, soft and rugged, and for a moment, wants to stay like this. He can’t.

Summary
It’s now the silence in a calm day that frightens him. The gentle breeze of a warm day. The soft sound of pop music is too far for him to truly decipher what artist is playing. With Vecna in play, nothing is safe. And while Steve had Robin, and somewhat of a nice friendship with Nance, he had no one to talk to about the crushing weight of anxiety, paranoid, hallucinations, and PTSD that utterly consumed his every waking step.
After all, they knew that pain. Shared it with him, a bond forged in blood and settled in scars. He couldn't worry them about him, because they had their own issues and as the (self decided, accidental) protector of the group, he couldn't burden them.
So, he turns to a friend he never thought he’d have. Someone he never got along with when they were kids, even though they shared the same hallways, and made eye contact in passing way too many times to count. A person who used to crash his parties only to walk in the outskirts of the shadows, so nobody except his buyers and Steve knew he was there.
Eddie Munson.
Or, more accurately, Eddie Munson’s grave.

Steve blinks, mercifully leaning back. "No?"
"Nope," Eddie presses out. "Actually, I was, uh." He forces himself to exhale, and says, "I was trying to rub one out."
Steve stares at him. "What?"
"You know," Eddie says nervously. "Crankin' the hog. Whacking off. Jerkin' the gerkin. Stroking the one-eyed snake -"
"No I got that," Steve says, and Eddie immediately shuts up, "you're saying that's how you tore your sutures?"
"Yes."
"By -"
"Yep."
"Oh my God," Steve says faintly, then starts laughing.

But he didn’t count on the fact there was one person in the room who, besides Eleven and Hopper, had the reason to be the most stir-crazy of them all — and Munson had practically made antagonizing Steve into an even bigger pastime than a professional goddamn sport.
There were a variety of one liners he liked to deploy when Steve would roll his eyes or let loose a huff of annoyance.
“What’s got your panties in a twist, Harrington?” he would ask, or, “Baby skip his nap today?”
A personal favorite of his seemed to be some variation of asking if it was Steve’s time of the month. “You on your period, sweetheart?” he’ll ask. It never failed to kill with the boys, who would fall all over themselves laughing when he asked — usually after whatever meeting they were in, because it also never failed to get Nancy apoplectic. Munson, to his credit, had only needed twice to learn to keep that one way under his breath and out of her earshot for fear she’d shoot his nuts off.
These questions also had the unique ability to make Steve as red as a fucking tomato which, like, fuck him, he guessed.
In which Steve learns a thing or two, by doing a thing or two.

Thirty minutes later, Steve is making his way through the tunnels.
It’s hardly his first time– after everything happened, they were too nervous to use the truck and give away Hopper’s safe house so they’d take the tunnels. Now, eight months into their new reality, they rarely need to use them.
It’s why Steve jumped at the opportunity. It’s the only way he gets to see–
“Harrington!” Eddie cheers when Steve comes into view. Grinning, he offers him a dramatic curtsy. “You’re a sight for sore eyes, especially down here.”

Summary
It started, bizarrely enough, with pillows.
After the "earthquakes" and the chasms opening up around town, and the "ritual murders" and everything else, it had taken a while for things to settle. The town was fearful and reeling from the events of the spring of '86, but things eventually became more normal. People started going back to work and shops started opening up again. It wasn't the same as it was, and it likely never would be, but things were getting better.So, of course, that's when it started getting weird again.
