“Fine,” she spat, her voice trembling with rage. “Then I hope you cut deeper the next time. No one would care if you finished the job, you know?”
Madeline flinched as if she’d been slapped again, but she didn’t respond. She just stared at Helen with those fucking blue eyes, the same eyes that had once looked at her with trust and even love.
Helen sat up and looked at her with disgust, with the same hatred one might feel for a starving beggar in the middle of a big city. To Helen, Madeline had just become the most miserable being that had ever existed.
She finally turned on her heels and stormed out of the bedroom. But, before she could even leave the apartment, she stopped.
“I wish you never existed, Mad,” she whispered without even looking at her again.Aka: after a huge fight, Helen wishes that Madeline Ashton had never existed and her wish (for better or for worse) comes true.

Over the years, Ernest has seen many things.
Ernest’s first look at Madeline Ashton was from his friend, dragging him to the local theater in downtown New York to watch the latest movie—Thrust!—a new drama about a female blonde bandit known for swindling men out of their fortunes and running away on horseback, another box office drama that didn't do so well amongst reviewers but he himself found it quite entertaining.
Helen Sharp was his first date in months, long shifts kept him occupied and offered little to no free time for leisurely activities. She was kind, witty, and the type of nerdy girl beauty that made his heart skip.

Pivotal moments, intense emotional moments you’ve had with family and friends, loved ones. They’re supposed to replay in your head at warp speed, moving so quickly it can be hard to even begin to process. But it is nothing but a surge of brain activity meant to cushion your fall before your mind completely shuts down, forcing your organs and bodily functions to cease all activity as well.
Helen Sharp sees nothing when a truck is barreling towards her as she turns the wheel to get back onto her street. She doesn’t see anything when her car is hit violently on its side and flips three times over, skidding into a ditch filled with water. Her body is thrown around like a ragdoll, the seat belt constraining her as much as it can, failing to protect her head as it gets whacked into the steering wheel and the driver side window, cracking the glass. She hangs upside down, blood draining from her limbs straight to her head.
