    Summary

Kurapika’s chest went cold. His blood froze in his veins. His mind said, no. His body protested, it can’t be. His heart screamed, not him, not him, not him.

“Mizai,” Kurapika asked slowly, and he heard his own voice as if from a million miles away. “Where is Leorio?”

And Kurapika was quite positive he was having a nightmare, or he was actually dead and this was hell, because he actually felt the ground drop out from under his feet when Mizai met his gaze with those mismatched eyes and said, “We don’t know.”

    ___

The Succession War has been decided. Kurapika has found the last of the Eyes. At last he can start to put his life back together. And then Leorio was kidnapped.

Kurapika will tear apart the Black Whale himself to find Leorio.

Leorio is positive Kurapika has not even noticed he's gone. So now it's up to him - and the snarkiest, sassiest, youngest Zoldyck - to find a way out of this mess.

    key points:
    - post-succession war and post-scarlet eyes retrieval. that alone might actually make this the single most optimistic take on all this black whale business that i've seen so far
    - leorio discovering that the newest addition to the phantom troupe is yet another child victim of the zoldyck family and responding appropriately

    key quote(s):

► And that – oh, that was enough to have Kurapika manifesting his chains on his hand and his eyes flashing red. Because how dare, how dare Mizaistom imply Kurapika would ever compromise Leorio’s safety? The man who followed a child through the Hunter Exam because he did not want him to be hurt or lost? The man who ran through fog and mist to give Hisoka a piece of his mind, even after he killed six people without blinking? The man who allowed himself to be bitten by a cave full of snakes to warn others back? The man who spent three days at a feverish Kurapika’s bedside, nursing him back to health? The man who stood on the Hunter’s Association stage and begged the world to help him save a single sick child?

(And where were you? Kurapika asked himself for the hundredth time, the thousandth. You weren’t there for Gon. You weren’t there for Killua. You weren’t there for Leorio. You had money and power and connections and you left him to fend for himself. You left him alone. You left him behind. You let him down.)

“There is nothing,” Kurapika hissed at Mizai, his chains flashing and teeth bared, “nothing, more important than Leorio’s safety.”

► “You remind me a little bit of one of the friends he talked about, you know,” the woman said thoughtfully, her voice crackling. “The one who stopped him from fighting an old bag such as myself, the one who made him want to be a better person and grow up a little.” She smiled up at him. “Blond. Kind eyes.”

► “And now they’re out traveling together again?” Kalluto asked. If Leorio didn’t know better, he would have thought Kalluto almost sounded hopeful for a happy ending. Their knees were tucked up so that their pointy chin rested on them, arms wrapped around their legs. “And they’re traveling the world now? Killua, Alluka, and… Gon?”

It was the first time Kalluto had called Gon by his name and not that boy. Leorio smiled sadly at Kalluto.

    “Not quite, kid.”

► Kurapika knew there was just about no way to get out of this conversation with his dignity and reputation intact, so he decided to cut his losses and change the subject entirely. “You know, I also traveled with your brother for some time.”

“I do know that,” Kalluto said carefully. Kurapika felt like he was negotiating prices and lives with other mafiosos. Except Kalluto was miles better than they were. Their casual tone belied the implicit message, make me an offer I can’t refuse.

Kurapika smirked and pulled out his trump card. “Did he tell you about the time Killua super-charged everything in the hotel room to shock him every time he touched something new?”

    Kalluto smirked. “He did not.”

► “You left,” Kalluto’s voice raised a little, cracked on the second word. “You left, Killua. And when you came back for Alluka you left me behind again.”

Leorio wondered if Killua would point out that he left Kalluto behind that second time because Kalluto was already gone, off with Illumi in the Phantom Troupe. But he also knew that Kalluto was not upset so much about the physical lack of a rescue attempt as they were at the way that Killua had never even checked on them. Had never tried to reach out.

But Killua surprised and impressed Leorio again. He just sent Kalluto a tiny, proud smile. “You left, too.”

► Kurapika sounded so small when he spoke. He stared straight ahead, eyes level with Leorio’s collarbone. His fingers were still knotted against Leorio’s jacket. “I just. For a second. I thought I could be someone I liked again.” He lowered his head. “I like who I am when I’m with you. And I wanted… I wanted to be someone you like, too.”

    Oh.

    Oh.

Leorio wanted to scream. He wanted to cry. He wanted to bundle Kurapika up against him. But instead, he laughed. Softly and kindly, but he laughed. Because dear, darling, stubborn, stupid Kurapika…

“You still don’t get it,” Leorio told him.

► Leorio’s heart felt about eight sizes too big for his chest. “I want to kiss you again.”

Kurapika smirked up at him. His eyes sparkled under the starlight, and he looked ethereal. Leorio was spellbound. “Do it, then.”

“I’m going to be less nice about it,” Leorio warned him. Kurapika laughed, expression open and smile wide and easy.

“Promises, promises,” he breathed, and Leorio kissed him again.

"I've been trying not to think about Xiao-xiong and Song-xiong," Wei WuXian confesses. "I didn't know them that well either, but I really liked meeting them. I guess I had known what their deal was before, but to actually meet them was like, Here, idiot, here's two cultivators doing exactly what you want to do! It's possible after all!" Lan WangJi stops breathing. Wei WuXian continues, "I thought then that maybe after everything was over I could…" He stops and clears his throat. Then he admits, "Well, I sort of fantasized about whisking you away from Gusu and convincing you to join their sect with me."

    "Oh," Lan WangJi breathes.

    key points:
    - this fic escaped me once and the loss tormented me so badly i had to tweet "does anyone have that one fic with chronically depressed autistic lwj mourning songxiao." and then i went to go find it myself before anyone replied anyway
    - lwj's flirtatious paperman has a sad face that he draws on it himself

    key quote(s):

► Song ZiChen bows to the juniors, who bow awkwardly back, and then he bows to Wei WuXian and Lan WangJi. When they straighten again, Lan Wangji expects that he'll turn around and leave straightaway, but he doesn't; instead he takes a step closer to Wei WuXian and presses a dry, black-smeared kiss to his cheek, and in his surprise Wei WuXian lets it happen. Lan WangJi has long accepted that he feels generally jealous and protective over Wei WuXian, but here at least he feels no resentment. It isn't that the kiss isn't romantic, because he thinks it probably is, at least a little; but the love is for the parts of Wei WuXian that resemble Xiao XingChen, and not really Wei WuXian himself.

► After some embarrassing waffling, he retrieves an unmarked talisman paper and cuts out a paperman. He draws two lines on the face for sad-looking eyes, and a third line for his forehead ribbon, and between the two features he figures it'll be immediately recognizable as himself.

► "I'm tired of tragedy," he decides slowly. Wei WuXian hums to let him know he's listening. "Tired of mourning us."

    "Us?" Wei WuXian prompts.

"You," Lan WangJi clarifies. "Them. The person I could have been. The people we could have been."

► It's true, he hasn't slept in since his depression spiral after Wei WuXian's death. Lan WangJi squints at the windows, then at Wei WuXian, who looks like he's torn between chastising them and teasing them. Lan WangJi isn't sure what he hopes will win. At last Wei WuXian shakes his head and says, "Aiyah, well, he's fine, we're fine. In the future maybe don't burst shrieking into the room of two people who have trauma responses to loud noises and people invading their space." The kids look stricken by that, even Jin Ling.

► "Are you still sad?" Wei WuXian asks after a while, when he's almost done combing.

Lan WangJi inhales carefully, tips his head to the side. "Wei Ying," he says gently, "I am always sad."

► "I missed you," Lan WangJi tells him. "It did make me sad."

Wei WuXian's hands still in his hair. "...Oh," he says. He's silent as he wraps Lan WangJi's hair around itself, slides his jade hairpin into place. Lan WangJi hands him his forehead ribbon and hopes that Wei WuXian understands what that means, what Lan WangJi can't say yet. Wei WuXian takes it after a moment and presses a kiss to the shell of Lan WangJi's ear before tying it, so maybe he does.

► "You wanna apologize too, bratty nephew mine?" Wei WuXian prompts Jin Ling.

"Sorry Hanguang-Jun. Sorry Senior Mo," Jin Ling mutters. "I should have thought. Uncle Jiang doesn't like being startled either."

Lan WangJi can see on his face when Wei WuXian's heart falls. He rallies quickly and says, "Apology accepted, A-Ling. Just don't do it again."

    “Yes,” Sizhui says.

“So—” Jingyi’s voice cracks here, “this kid is Senior Wei.”

    key points:
    - (2024 edit) this remains a sort of gold standard for tragic modern aus for me
    - it is FUCKED UP what this one did to my heart
    - kurapika's difficulties socializing stood out as being of note and were important to me when i first read this
    - the absurd inevitability of loving people who are there one day and gone the next

    key quote(s):

► “You didn’t deserve to have this happen to you. You don’t have to be tough about it.”

Kurapika’s entire body is as tense as a steel fiber. Leorio feels his heartbeat thudding though his thin cotton t-shirt. Kurapika continues to hold himself tight, but his wild heartbeat gradually slows.

“Do you have anyone you can talk to?” Leorio murmurs into Kurapika’s hair, and he feels the shake of his head against his chest. “Oh, Kurapika. Nobody? No friends?

“It’s too dangerous,” Kurapika says, his voice muffled against Leorio’s collarbone. “It’s too dangerous. I can’t involve anyone in this. I shouldn’t have told you, even, it’s—”

His voice is growing frantic. Leorio squeezes him closer and strokes his feather-soft hair, breathing in the smell of his minty shampoo.

“It’s okay. Hey. It’s all right. I’m your friend. I wanna help you.”

► “As you can see here, Detective Mully, a trace of blood is still evident on the stone floor! If we work carefully, we can extract a sample—”

Leorio thinks of Kurapika’s trembling hands in the sunset and shuts the laptop with a snap. Suddenly nauseated, he lies back onto his covers and stares up into the darkness.

These were real people who Kurapika loved. Leorio doesn’t want to see the pictures and take part in the further exploitation of their murders. He doesn’t need all of the gory details. He thinks about how it would feel to see a show like this about Pietro or Senritsu or Zepile, and feels sick with disgust.

► “Hi,” Leorio offers, rubbing the back of his neck. “Um.”

“What are you doing here?” Kurapika says. “How did you...did you buy a flight? How did you get here? Why are you here?”

“You asked me to come. So I did.”

► “Those are my mother’s eyes,” Kurapika says after a long pause. “She had the two-toned iris.”

    Leorio closes his eyes.

    “I...wondered about that.”

Leorio rolls over to face Kurapika. His profile is illuminated by the moonlight, and his long lashes cast spidery shadows across his freckled cheeks.

“I couldn’t do it myself,” Kurapika continues, “so that’s why I asked you. I trust you.”

    “Oh, honey,” Leorio says, heartbroken.

► Leorio knows how hospitals function. It’s not the doctor’s fault that he can’t spend hours with a dying patient when there are living ones to attend to. And of course Pietro didn’t want pastoral services. Pietro wanted to hit on the cute nurses and talk baseball with the janitors. He didn’t want to talk about dying. It’s not the doctor’s fault. It’s not the chaplain’s fault. It’s nobody’s fault but Leorio’s that Pietro breathed his last breath all alone in this bleak hospital room. It slinks into Leorio’s heart and strangles him with an icy hand.

He will never forgive himself for this. Never.

    key points:
    - sylvain and felix take a cabin trip
    - a very charming realism in its depiction of cabin life
    - felix displaying a level of honesty he couldn't afford himself during the war

    key quote(s):

► Sylvain has been rendered speechless. What is happening? What the hell is happening? Felix is standing here, slowly undressing, telling him about all the fish and firewood he’s collected, and isn’t agitated by the fact that Sylvain had slept in?

The cabin, he thinks vaguely. The rules are different in this cabin.

► Felix rubs his eyes with one of his hands and sighs. “I didn’t mean to get so angry.” Pause. “I know that everybody thinks of me as some heartless slab of stone, but I do have the capacity to worry about people.”

Sylvain’s face falls. Sometimes he forgets that Felix is at least somewhat self-aware of his at times grisly personality. “I know,” he says, voice light.

“Anyway, I just—” He shakes his head and sighs. “—I can’t lose any more people.”

► “When we go back, we can try making it less miserable,” Sylvain says, trying to be hopeful. He isn’t sure how much he believes his words. “If you want.”

“I guess.” Felix doesn’t sound convinced. “I’m going to sleep now. Goodnight.”

Sylvain pets Felix’s head. “Goodnight,” he says, quiet.

He wonders how long Felix has been unhappy.

► “It’s stupid. It just makes me feel like I have something to show for. We spent so much time together when we were little in the snow, and a resistance to the cold is…” He makes a grasping motion with his hand. “It makes the memories tangible.”

► “I am serious! It’s like you said, it won’t change anything! But…” His thumb stroked over Linhardt’s knuckles, across the stains on his skin from magic filtering through his flesh time and time again. “I don’t have a ring for you. But we don’t have money or titles or any inheritance anyway, so what does all that tradition really matter in the long run? I wanna marry you when we get to Brigid. But I also really wanna marry you right here and now. Even if won’t make any difference, I-“

“It will.” Something in Linhardt’s voice was choked and strained as he squeezed Caspar’s hands so hard it felt like he’d never let go. “It will…make a difference.” When Caspar looked up at him again, Linhardt’s eyes were shining as he smiled at him, his fingers soft against Caspar’s jaw as he cupped his face. “I’ve waited long enough. Waiting a little longer won’t kill me. But if I could I’d marry you right this second.”

Caspar leaned in with a wide grin. “So why don’t you?”

    [from "The Road Less Traveled"]

    ► “I thought you’d enjoy a little quiet.”

“I enjoy you,” he insisted, wiping his eyes. “After being married to you for so long, it just didn’t feel right. The house was too…big. The bed was too big. Everything was too big for me without you.”

    [from "A Perfect Fit"]

► “I want this to be our last wedding.” He squeezed Caspar’s hands, fingers curling against his palms. “Because the next place we go, when we’re done seeing everything Brigid has to offer, I want to be that cottage on the hill that you told me about. With the library. And the hammock.”

"And the chickens?" He sounded hopeful.

    "And the chickens."

“Yeah,” Caspar said. “Yeah, I’d like that.”

It’s a really unfortunate thing, developing a crush on your husband. Wei Ying had assumed this would be easy. Lan Zhan had been so icy and unpleasant to him, it had never occurred to him that he might end up spending the next however many years with this dumb, burning feeling in his chest whenever he looks at him.

“Okay,” says Wei Ying. “But tell me if I…if the pretending gets to be too hard, okay?”

Mildly garbled but generally correct. “You got married?” Wei Ying asks teasingly.

“We all get married,” Yuan says. “We are a family. We stay together. That’s what wedding means.” Then he starts singing the A-B-C song to himself.

► “No, no, no,” Wei Ying says, picking him up. “I just meant, if tomorrow is scary, because we’re going to the airport—”

Yuan bursts into tears, and Wei Ying kind of can’t blame him. “Whoops,” he says. “Shit. Don’t do that. Nothing bad is going to happen, I promise. I promise!”

Yuan is crying silently, giant tears streaming down his cheeks, and his expression is full-on betrayed. “We got married,” he whispers.

Wei Ying wants to crawl under the floor. He has never felt like a worse person. “I know, I know—” he says.

Yuan holds his arms up imploringly to Lan Zhan, who swoops in and takes him. Yuan puts his arms around Lan Zhan’s neck and cries quietly into his shoulder.

► Yuan smiles at him. “Adoption,” he recites. “It’s a formal legal procedure.”

“What does it mean?” Wei Ying asks.

Yuan gets just a little pink. It’s adorable. “You’re keeping me,” he says.

It's hard enough to grow up surrounded by political drama when all you really want to do is climb trees and take naps with your best friend. It's even harder when your best friend spends every summer in the next county over, and there's an entire sea between the two of you. Harder still when wartime falls upon everyone's shoulders, and words become a precious commodity.

    Summary

Ok so everyone knows Dave and Dirk had a long amazing talk that presumably ended with Dave asking him for advice on the Being Not Straight stuff. My problem is, Dave also spent three years with his gloriously gay twin sister on a fucking space rock while he was right in the middle of coming to terms with all this stuff. So I wrote this mostly to reconcile the gap I think exists there, with a bunch of other Dave centric stuff thrown in with it.

► Dave can’t tell if Kanaya’s really good for a beginner, if she’s been practicing on her own, or if Dave is just not really trying. He’s gonna go for the latter. He should have left. He should have saved himself from this. Compounding losses are not conducive to his goals. He should not care enough about these people he has known for only a month to be so hurt about their deaths.

But Mollymauk Tealeaf lies lifeless on the ground, yards away, the slow bleeding of his body turning the ostentatious rainbow of his attire to dull blacks and browns.

The remaining members of the Mighty Nein attempt to pull themselves together and save Mollymauk. A unique situation calls for a unique solution.

Molly groans behind her softly, “Really? Did you really have to—oh, alright then—,” but he doesn’t step in, and he doesn’t stop her.

“Stay down,” Beau growls, and the guy—did she ever get his name? She doesn’t think so—presses a hand to his face and swears, but doesn’t rise up off the floor.

Caleb, half-turned on the bench where Beau had been sitting a moment before, takes a slow sip of his drink. “Tonight is not the night to fuck with us, friend,” he says.

    Summary

    The dam finally breaks.

“I love you,” and she couldn’t hold the words back if she tried but she doesn’t even want to, “so much, Fjord.” His thumb stills but he doesn’t let go of her hand, eyes tracking across her face as if he’s looking for something.

Jester has nothing left to hide.

“And it’s okay if you don’t feel the same way. I’ll be okay. I just needed you to know.” Fjord nods imperceptibly, just to himself, and then he squeezes her hand, reaches up to cradle her jaw with his free one, and slowly ducks down towards her.

Jester doesn’t realizes what he’s doing until his warm mouth is pressed against hers. She’s frozen for a moment, staring at his closed eyelids and holding her breath, but then his thumb brushes her cheek and his nose nudges hers, and this is real.
