When they got to Ren’s car, Martyn yanked on the back seat door handle. It didn’t budge. “It’s locked!” he shouted at Ren through the deafening onslaught of rain, forgetting for a moment that he was talking to his employer.
Ren only laughed, though, frantically fumbling with his car keys, grocery bags still in his arms. Martyn heard a click, and took that as his cue to open the door and very unprofessionally dump the bags into the back seats before hopping into the passenger seat faster than he ever had in his life. He was pretty sure his bags weren’t the ones with the eggs. He hoped.

Zaun’s Machine Herald scoffs the first time he reads it, tossing the stained and torn paper that his apprentice brought down the conveyor behind his shoulder. He is rewiring his left arm again, trying to iron out why his sensors detect a microsecond’s delay between the synapses firing in his brain and the acknowledgement by his mechanical nerves.
“Natural causes,” he scoffs. “He is what? Sixty years old? Men that rich do not die that young.”

Summary
The Coastal Laboratory for Abnormal Wildlife Studies has found themselves in possession of a live, captive, and dangerous siren—something previously unheard of in the scientific community. Doc, one of their top researchers, is assigned leadership of the study on Specimen 9201223, later nicknamed ‘Martyn’.
Over the course of the project’s run, he and the siren develop an intense rivalry that eventually mellows into a far more complex relationship, as Doc discovers that Martyn is far more human than they’d initially assumed.
Unfortunately, the rest of the organization does not have the siren’s best interests at heart. As Doc grows closer to Martyn, he finds himself forced into increasingly-risky decisions in the name of protecting him, trying to prove his humanity to people who only see a monster.

They all called Martyn paranoid.
When he started to build up his bunker, everyone in his tiny town called him crazy. Said he was worried about something that would never come. People would say things like, "The world isn't ending," "There are no wars," and "The government isn't this evil entity you need to prepare to fight against!" They'd call him a lunatic, a conspiracy theorist, and a maniac. But Martyn wouldn't call himself any of those things.
Martyn’s a survivalist, and really, who's laughing now?
Or, Martyn survives the zombie apocalypse by building a self-sufficient home in the middle of a ghost town and lives alone until Ren stumbles into his life and steals his heart.
