“Val could have some decency y’know,” He growled, lifting his gentle eyes, “They don’t even clean you up,” He reached out, using his thumb to wipe at a spot on his thick fur at his collarbone.

“Don’t think I will,” he responds mildly, and Ellie exhales a snort like an angry bull, wiggling again.
With a sound of exasperation, Joel lets her go before he drops her, and he’s too slow to catch her before she ducks under the table out of reach and starts shoving at Tommy’s legs. He plants his feet in response, and the only warning for what’s coming next is a frustrated growl before the leg of his jeans is yanked up and sharp little teeth sink in above his ankle.
“Ow!” He exclaims, more surprised than hurt, even though she certainly wasn’t holding back. Sarah was never really a biter, so he hadn’t seen that move coming.
Apparently this one, however, has no qualms against being a fucking piranha.

“Language,” comes Joel’s voice, as sharp as when he was delivering orders not to smoke around Sarah.
The surreal shock of it has him silent for a long moment, trying to convince himself that he’s not having a stroke. That’s all he needs with a wife and a baby on the way, stroking out after hallucinating a child talking to his brother who hasn’t even looked at a child in a decade. Hell, Joel had made them move once because the apartment next door had a little girl who tried to greet him with a chipper “hi!” each morning, and on day 4 of it, Joel had gone back into their living room and put his fist through the wall in total, eerie silence.
From a man who used to be the first at any event to offer to hold a baby, it had been a stark reminder of exactly where his brother’s head is these days.
