Summary
Hitoya prided himself on his ability to tell when something was wrong with someone. Having worked with kids for so long, he could pick up on small changes in behavior pretty well, if he said so himself. Though, this ability was better suited towards dealing with children instead of adults. (namely one long, gray-haired doctor) Children, and teenagers with underlying trauma, which certainly included one Jyushi Aimono.

Summary
Kanata hands him a warm mug, filled a little over halfway of recently heated milk. The mug is yellow and decorated with little purple stars, and he wonders if Ryuseitai sleepovers are now common enough that each member has their own mug at Chiaki's house. "Thank you Shinkai-dono, de gozaru!"
"It is no 'problem', Shinobu-kun. It is a 'mother' whose job is to take 'care' of her 'children', puka puka."
He pauses mid sip to look at Kanata's warm smile and soft eyes for a moment. It certainly would be a face that belongs to a mother gazing at her children. It wasn't the first time Kanata had referred to him or Tetora and Midori as his children.
"Do you think we are a family, Shinkai-dono?"
"Of 'course', puka puka. We all come from the 'sea', we are all 'family'."
Shinobu is pretty sure he didn't come from the sea, but whether it's the milk warming him inside or the way Kanata is fixing his hair and still looking at him with such loving eyes, he believes it. Of course they're a family. They always have been.

The scarred man blinked. “Nanda?”

The Heroes of Courage are spread across ages. Hundreds to thousands of years between them. It should come as no surprise that they are having some trouble communicating. But when they’re dropped in a world of alien technology and a language wholly unfamiliar, they really wish Hylia had thought ahead.
Or, the gang-meets-wild fic in which there is an appropriate amount of linguistic drift between Links, Hylia does not provide Google Translate, and Wild is a linguaphile among other things.
