Kanata hands him a warm mug, filled a little over halfway of recently heated milk. The mug is yellow and decorated with little purple stars, and he wonders if Ryuseitai sleepovers are now common enough that each member has their own mug at Chiaki's house. "Thank you Shinkai-dono, de gozaru!"
"It is no 'problem', Shinobu-kun. It is a 'mother' whose job is to take 'care' of her 'children', puka puka."
He pauses mid sip to look at Kanata's warm smile and soft eyes for a moment. It certainly would be a face that belongs to a mother gazing at her children. It wasn't the first time Kanata had referred to him or Tetora and Midori as his children.
"Do you think we are a family, Shinkai-dono?"
"Of 'course', puka puka. We all come from the 'sea', we are all 'family'."
Shinobu is pretty sure he didn't come from the sea, but whether it's the milk warming him inside or the way Kanata is fixing his hair and still looking at him with such loving eyes, he believes it. Of course they're a family. They always have been.

The Heroes of Courage are spread across ages. Hundreds to thousands of years between them. It should come as no surprise that they are having some trouble communicating. But when they’re dropped in a world of alien technology and a language wholly unfamiliar, they really wish Hylia had thought ahead.
Or, the gang-meets-wild fic in which there is an appropriate amount of linguistic drift between Links, Hylia does not provide Google Translate, and Wild is a linguaphile among other things.

Donnie sits back in his chair, ignoring the twinge in his lower back the way he’s ignored it for the past three hours, and says, “What does the hard way look like?”
“You’re gonna hate it.”
“Color me intrigued.”
Leo shrugs and starts to lift himself up. The infirmary bed is raised at an angle, to help Leo breathe and reduce the risk of pneumonia that has kept Don awake at night, but now he’s pushing himself upright all the way, kicking at his blanket with the foot that isn’t casted.
“Oh my god, stop, I hate it,” Donnie blurts, all but flinging his tablet aside in his rush to put an end to this nightmare. “You win, you monster!”

Leo slumps back in his seat, careful not to knock his healing shell, his mouth manages to curl itself into a small, fleeting smile.
“When did you become so grown up?” He says, and there’s supposed to be some humor to his words but it seems to fall flat, what with the way he watches his brothers shoulders stiffen, his whole body bristling before he seems to roll it away with a shake of his hands, he tends to the soup a moment longer before he answers him.
An abrupt, sharp laugh expels out of his brother, seemingly forced, he swallows it down before he turns to face him, this time with a bowl of steaming soup.
“Plenty of opportunities so far, dude,” he tells him, a brief melancholy look flashing across his face before he’s quickly rearranging it to something more neutral.

It’s been common knowledge, ever since they were tots, that Donnie was the best swimmer.
The discovery had made a five year old Leo pout for a while, but it was true. There was no shell to get in the way of him diving underwater, darting like a swift arrow under the currents.
And, like it was common knowledge that Donnie was the strongest swimmer, it was made aware very early on that Mikey was the weakest.
His brothers took to water easily. They swam as they were born to do, effortless even at such a young age. Mikey, seeing his brothers having fun, had tried to do the same with a giggle and a splash.
It didn’t end well.~
After days of heavy rain, the lair floods with Donnie and Mikey still inside. Born a soft shell, Donnie can easily survive such conditions. Mikey, on the other hand, cannot.
TLDR: the lair floods with Mikey and Donnie still inside, and Donnie is the only one that can swim.

Smiling faces stare back at him. Familiar, yet unfamiliar. A version of his family that has long since died in a timeline where he wasn't able to make things right. Where his mistake cost them everything.
All dead, because of him.
"Nononononononono", he mutters under his breath. His voice doesn't even begin to convey the fear and grief that is slowly choking him.
Leo spots blood stains on one corner of the photo. They are smeared over part of Mikey's face and he softly brushes his thumb over them, absent-mindedly wondering why he is able to see them at all. His room is too dark to make out small details like this.
Which is the moment he realizes that the room is not as dark as it had been a minute ago. A circle of dark purple light is forming directly beneath his right hand. Leo recognizes it as a portal even before his fist sinks into it and unfortunately it takes him a few precious seconds to get over his shock and rip his hand back out again.
It is too late. Something on the other side has sensed him and this time it's not letting him go.

So he found himself crouched down on the weathered porch, prodding at the chips of paint that flaked off the wood. He could subtly feel the sharp splints of loose slivers digging into his knees. The brisk wind licked against his scales, providing him a teaspoon of comfort from the desolated air…

Leo’s eyes lit up, mischievous in the way Donnie rarely saw these days. Since he had recovered from his injuries and returned to patrolling, Leo had fallen into his role as leader well. He rarely had the opportunity to let loose anymore, and that was precisely what Donnie was relying on for this mission.
He knew Leo would be willing to do just about anything to let off some steam.
