Summary
The thing is, Callum’s- well, he’s Callum. The bloke from the bookshop that’s tucked down just away from Albert Square, that you’d only really see if you were looking for it. The man that’s hidden behind a door that was once bright blue, but that’s now faded and chipped with time and the shitty British weather. The clumsy, friendly guy behind the counter with little to say for himself and little to be remembered for. He’s just him, and he’d found some way to be content in that, a quiet little life with nothing much to speak for.
Whereas Ben- in the same way Callum’s just Callum, Ben is Ben Mitchell, the man who’s been in near enough every movie that Callum’s seen showing at the cinema in the city for the past year. He’s something else, something so much bigger than Callum could ever really comprehend.
They don’t work (they shouldn’t work) and they’re nothing alike (maybe they’ve got more in common than Callum ever thought)-
-but maybe that’s why they do.

Ben’s always taken some sort of solace in the night. It’s a place to hide away, to feel like there’s no one else in the world and a lot of the time that’s easier than facing up to things. It’s something to belong to, without the pressure of being and it’s a refreshing feeling - one that’s so starkly different from harsh daytime, when people expect and they judge, with harsh eyes and sharp words. There’s expectation in daylight, but there’s nothing like that in moonlight. It’s a blank canvas, and it’s a gateway to something bigger.

When Ben drifts awake, slow and steady and heady, it’s to the feeling of a cold bed beside him. It barely makes him hesitate at first, because the life that he’s got right now has led him to recognise that feeling. It’s not necessarily a bad thing at all, though. More often than not, an empty bed means that Oliver’s woken up, because he’s learning that’s what life is like with a one year old. But God, it’s not like he’d change it for the world.

Quiet isn’t something that can often be said about the Mitchell house, but that’s exactly what greets Ben when he finally gets home at the end of the day with Lexi in tow - although to be fair, her being out of the house is probably one of the reasons why it’s so quiet. She’s not one that’s familiar with a quiet home, and honestly that’s one of the things that Ben loves most about her - she’s so unafraid to be her complete, loud, bubbly self and it’s a beautiful thing to see. Ben’s not exactly a stranger to pretending, to having a different face for everyone you meet but it’s just recently, just these last few years that it’s started to change - there’s one man’s influence in that, and the thought makes his heart race like only a thought of Callum could.

Callum opens his mouth to tell Ben to quiet down, terrified that someone’s going to find them but there’s no one around - no sane person would be. It’s sad, maybe, that this is the only place he can truly let go - in the middle of a park late at night.

It makes his chest ache, because Ben knows what that pain is like and he wouldn’t wish it on anyone. It’s a different story, of course, but it’s also the same in so many ways because he’d been hiding too, with Paul. They’ve found each other now, and that’s healed over most of the wounds but the scars still lie, and Ben knows that Callum’s still learning to accept his.

He takes the envelope from the table without too much thought, ripping the back open and tugging out the card that’s inside. It’s one of the cheesy valentine’s ones that seem to be everywhere with flowers on the front and a cutesy message, and Callum’s immediate thought is that it’s Ben, and it’s all some elaborate scheme and it sets off this warm tickling feeling through his stomach.
He opens it, and that feeling dissipates immediately when his eyes travel over the words.
