Summary
Years. Broken into months into weeks into days—into hours, minutes, seconds—into moments. Simple at one end, complex at the other. In Draco’s experience, moments, even when simple, had a habit of becoming irretrievable. Moments grew, stretched, multiplied into ages and eras that defined whole stretches of measurable time. Draco regretted several moments in his life, some within his control, some without: all of them irretrievable in nature. At a certain point, wedged between ‘what-ifs’ of his own devising, he’d stopped trying to keep track of those regrettable moments: now and then, pushing and pulling, coming and going, beginning and end. Moments were only moments for just as long. After that, he had no control.

“If this was your last birthday party you were ever going to have, how would you celebrate it?”
Natasha doesn’t drop her gaze from Tony’s, watching the way he rubs his forehead as if staving off an oncoming headache. She knows she can rile him up with only a few words, encourage him to act out in hopes that it will drive him to some revelation about the infection that looms like a dark cloud above him. She wonders if she could even talk him into turning this party into an international incident - it’s the kind of crazy idea that might cause the chaos needed for him to get his act together.
But Natasha is growing fond of this man behind the armor, more than she’d care to admit. It is her fondness for him that stays her prepared phrase about doing whatever he wants. Years later, she will admit that it is his eyes, hopeful and teasing but also lost and melancholy, that causes her to let whatever is left of Natasha answer him instead of Natalie.
“I’d spend it with a good bottle of vodka and someone who loves me,” she admits, letting Natalie’s smile quirk at her lips.

It comes back to quickly and too slow. The violence comes easily. She has it down, throws her body into it. It is muscle memory as she destroys the monsters around her. She was made to destroy, to change the world, to be strong and make sure the world did not suffer. She was not made to be indestructible herself, to not suffer herself.
