Buck catches the bowl, and then freezes, eyes widening. “Gay… Michael? Since when do you call Michael Gay Michael?”
Ah. Well.
“It just slipped out,” Bobby admits. “I don’t usually.”
Buck’s eyebrows furrow, something like quiet devastation falling onto his face. “Cap, are— are you homophobic?”
At this, Bobby startles. “What? No. Gay Michael is my best friend.”

Christopher starts shaking more violently then. “Buck jumped back in the water for me.”
There’s a protocol for a lot of scenarios, both in the Army and as an EMT. Eddie is used to knowing what to do, and how to do it; who to help, and where. Yet now, hopelessness splits through him like a bullet. Eddie doesn’t know what else to do other than hold his kid tighter and press his lips to his temple.
“Is that– Christopher?” Hen asks over his shoulder. The tiny pocket of universe that he’s created with just him, his son, and Buck’s name battering in his chest unravels.
Still keeping Christopher in his arms, Eddie rises to his feet. “I made Buck watch him for the day to get him out of the house. He– he brought him to the pier.”
“Where is he, Eddie?” Bobby asks carefully.

It messes with his brain, until Eddie speaks again, “I’ll pretend to only be a little offended none of you have thought to ask me before, but Buck, I’ve fixed a lot of cars. I can look at yours.”

Candid shots at work, pictures of him with Christopher Buck had taken, selfies of the three of them together, selfies of just Buck and Eddie, photos of Eddie with the rest of the team, photos from quarantine of Eddie and Chimney with bottles of beer on Buck’s balcony or that time they’d insisted they could improve the water pressure in Buck’s shower and ended up fully dressed and drenched, of Eddie posing with the cake they got him when he returned after the shooting, or with the cupcakes he and Buck had made for the bake sale at Christopher’s school, Eddie up on a ladder trying to fix his kitchen window before he’d relented and called his landlord, Eddie asleep in Buck’s jeep, head tilted back and mouth open. Proof of a life shared.

Buck slaps the back of his hand against Eddie’s chest. “I even carried Eddie here once.”
Eddie’s entire demeanor changes as he finds a way to get Buck to focus on him again. “That was the adrenaline.”
“Well, yeah,” Buck admits. “But I could do it now, too. Do you want me to prove it?”
That’s the flirtatious tone that was missing earlier, and Hen immediately pays closer attention. Eddie makes a sound that Hen has never heard him make, and it takes her a second to realize that it was a giggle. A giggle! If only she could record this shit for Chim and Karen.
“No,” he says, not very convincingly.

So, when the lightning strike finally provided the impetus for Bobby to admit that he also brought a kid into their family, she had every intention of seizing the opportunity to properly integrate Buck into the Grant-Nash family.
