Zayd looks up.
"Yang kau pernah tunjuk kat aku dulu—hmm…" Bahamin tilts his head, doing the thing he does when he's performing the act of trying to remember a detail he hasn't forgotten, a pantomime of forgetfulness clearly designed to give Zayd the pleasure of correcting him, "Mercedes?"
Zayd perks despite himself, straightens up out of his slump, his spine realigning and his shoulders squaring off and the defeated hunch of his posture unwinding. "BMW!" he says, and the correction comes out with a warmth to it he can't quite mask, an involuntary, ardent lift in his voice that he'd be embarrassed by if anyone other than Bahamin was listening. "BMW, Min."

Harap kau sihat. Aku sihat.
Mak aku tak habis lagi dengan eksperimen fish and chips pakai ikan sungai yang bapak aku tangkap. Aku rasa minggu ni je aku dah makan lebih banyak ikan daripada yang Tompok pernah makan sepanjang hayat dia. Cakap pasal Tompok, kucing jiran aku tu dah berjaya conquer laman depan rumah mak aku. Aku tak pasti sama ada aku patut bagitahu tuan dia atau biarkan je makhluk gemuk tu terus hidup dalam delusi yang rumah mak aku ni memang dia yang punya.
Anyway, Bapak aku cakap kalau aku duduk rumah lagi lama, dia nak suruh aku ikut dia pergi kait kelapa lepas dia siap menoreh. Masalahnya, pengait ada satu je.
"Bapak pakai pengait. Adik panjat je lah nanti."
Kahar, aku rasa Bapak aku tengah mempertimbangkan untuk sumpah aku jadi kera, lebih kurang macam sumpahan ikan pari. Lagi-lagi pula haritu,...

Zayd's eyes lift.
His vision takes a moment to cooperate, and then he sees the figure standing over him, backlit against the weak light spills into the alley, looking down at him with shoulder-length hair cascading down on one side, hair that Zayd knows, with total and resentful certainty, has no right to look as soft and shiny and lustrous as it does, not at this hour, not after everything that's happened, not when Zayd himself feels like he's been wrung out and left for dead on the gravel.
Zayd draws in a breath. His mouth almost curves.
Because there he is.
The saviour who has ruined Zayd's life.
