Today would’ve been her thirtieth birthday.
The thought doesn’t arrive gently. It doesn’t ease its way into Luka’s mind the way a memory should. One second there’s nothing but the dull gray haze of early morning, the weight of sleep still pressing behind his eyes, and the next, it’s there.
Thirty.

He stares up at the crucifix.
Christ hangs suspended in agony, ribs carved too clearly, wounds etched deep. Suffering made beautiful. Pain turned into purpose. Luka feels smaller than ever. “I was told it was not my fault. I don’t know what any of this is supposed to mean except that they’re gone and I’m not.”Or… Luka feels guilty about the death of his family, resulting in nightmares. Carter doesn’t know about it.

Summary
A familiar voice rings out from behind him. It wasn’t loud. It didn’t need to be. It was the voice that had haunted him for months. The dizzying, hollowed out panic he had spent months trying to bury.
Or… Sobriki returns to the ER but Luka and Carter are together

Summary
Luka didn’t say a word on the way out of the hospital. Carter had seen him like this before. The locked jaw, the rigid shoulders, the silence that felt like a wound in the air. The shift had been brutal for everyone, but Luka had caught the worst of it. Too many traumas, too many losses stacked one after the other until the last one (a kid, always a kid) cracked that thin ice he walked on whenever he pretended he was fine.
Or… Luka nearly breaks down after a particularly brutal shift and Carter is there to comfort him

Summary
Between traumas, admits, and tragedies, Carter and Luka have perfected the art of near misses. A stolen kiss in the suture room interrupted by a page. A hand brushing too long in the med supply closet before someone bursts in for gauze. A whispered promise behind curtain three that dissolves when a paramedic wheels in another patient. Each time, they get bolder, and more desperate.
Or.. Five times Luka and Carter try to steal a moment, plus the one time they were uninterrupted

Trinity froze mid swing, her pulse still racing, the book clutched uselessly in her hands. Her eyes adjusted just enough for the details to start clicking into place: the long nose, the familiar set of his shoulders, the graying beard. Her stomach dropped clean out of her body.

Summary
Mornings had always been their quiet sanctuary. Now, the same rooms felt hollow. Luka was thousands of miles away, in Croatia, tending to his father’s estate. But each morning bled into the next, and the space beside him stayed cold.

Summary
No matter how hard he tried to ignore it it was always a persistent and overbearing presence that wouldn’t ever dissipate. So he gave in to it. When he moved out, he turned into a hungry man. Desperate for experience, desperate for touch. He would fuck anyone willing to experiment with him, not caring if he would wake up the next morning with them still next to him or not. He wasn’t looking for a connection. He was looking for something to satiate this hunger brewing inside of him.
This primal kind of thing that needed to latch and bite and scratch onto any skin he could touch. But he didn’t want to watch the early morning sunlight kiss these people’s faces. So why is he now here, in this apartment, in a bed that’s not his, watching the sunlight peek through the curtains and onto Luka’s eyelashes.
They were drunk, Carter remembers that much due to the pounding headache he’s currently nursing, one too many beers and apple martinis he supposes.

Summary
Miguel never liked the cards he’d been dealt with.
Sharp fangs, jagged claws, and piercing red eyes didn’t exactly draw people in. He probably actually prefers it that way. People have always been unreliable to him, always letting him down one way or another. “It’s better this way” he tells himself frequently, almost as if he was trying to convince himself of that.
Until a certain Peter B. Parker decided it’d be fun to niggle his way into Miguel’s life.
Or: Miguel is in love with Peter but he’s in heavy denial
