Instead, it served only to frame her mortification like an avant-garde portrait titled “Woman Contemplating The Abyss of Her Own Literary Folly.”
“You're reading fanfiction for the series you secretly wrote under a pseudonym, about characters based on your own social circle, in which the fictional version of yourself is in an emotionally fraught, sexually repressed slow burn with a man based on my brother?”
Penelope's face, or what was visible of it above the cardigan, was now achieving colors previously only seen in particularly enthusiastic sunsets. If embarrassment could be harnessed as an energy source, her current state could have powered a small city for approximately three weeks.
