Summary
On the next day there is a blue glass bottle half-buried in the sand near their little fishing boat, a scroll of paper curling inside tantalizingly. Ed's first thought is that Stede is going to be absolutely delighted if his wildly impractical way of sending messages somehow caught on, but as he steps closer, he realizes that the handwriting on the letter is too familiar by far to be someone else's.
Dear Ed, the letter reads. Ed tilts his head to have a look through the glass.
You said you only ever received one of my letters in a bottle, and that you found it lovely. Since all the others got lost at sea, I thought I would write more of them for you.
“Stede!!” Ed yells, turning towards their ramshackle inn and holding the bottle up when Stede pops his head through the open door, eyebrows arched. “You lunatic!” Stede does not even have the decency to be embarrassed, looking down mock-coyly before he disappears again.
“This is some wildly romantic shit,” Ed mutters, getting the letter out of the bottle and unrolling it fully.

Summary
Ed wakes up with tiny purple bows in his beard, flowers in his hair, and a twinge in his knee. In order to rest his knee without the crew asking questions, he and Stede decamp to a deserted island for the day. This is fine. They'll be very busy continuing Stede's lessons in how not to die, and Ed won't have any time at all to have feelings. After all, you can't have feelings and do things at the same time. No way.

Summary
He hadn’t touched Stede much, the morning after the night before. He woke up in Stede’s arms and snuck away to bury Blackbeard at sea. Stede talked about their line of work over a tray of things that Ed had carefully assembled with his heart in his throat. It all sort of unraveled from there, he thinks. He’s touched Stede since then, but he’d also lost the person who had been by his side for most of his life, had stepped on land without knowing when he’d step off again, and told Stede he loved him. Pretty eventful few days. So now he just sits and looks, and lets his fingers sweep across Stede’s temple, his cheek. He’s kissed Stede since that morning, too, but it had felt huge and loud and urgent - plus it was kind of mid-battle, which did a lot for him in the moment but didn’t give him a chance to ease into it, to see where it took them. In some ways it’s more thrilling to sit across him in this shitty house with the candle burning low.
Truly just an entire fic of them making out in this shitty house.

Summary
This is a terrible idea. Ed knows, because it’s an idea he’s had before and hitched his wagon to before and felt the consequences of before. They need to talk. Stede needs to sit with this for a minute and breathe through it, but then Stede is also pressing into him with his entire body, his teeth set to Ed’s lower lip in a bite that shocks him so much he moans into it.
My interpretation of what happened after THAT SCENE.

Summary
For the OFMD Reverse Bang 2023!
Stede Bonnet has been Ed’s best and worst and most and least too. His best friend, the first one he’s ever had. He's the worst mistake Ed's ever made with the worst possible consequence ripping his sense of excitement to shreds. He's been the most captivating thing Ed's ever encountered and the least reliable person he’s ever been naïve enough to trust blindly. Perhaps that’s why, after months of bitter despondency and feral anger, when Stede Bonnet hauls himself over the side of The Revenge, worse for the wear but glowing with sun (and decidedly not dead, despite a piano, and a jungle cat, and a cart if the papers are to be believed), and determination, and competency, Ed feels a myriad of things. Chief among them, a fury so deep it makes his bones ache and, more interestingly, a relief so sweet it's nearly worth the bottomless pit of self-loathing he’s been occupying since he’d last laid eyes on him.

There’s a sudden rustling sound as Blackbeard kicks something across the floor. Frenchie bends down to retrieve it, and sees that it’s a notebook. Wide and empty, like that one Lucius used to carry around with him.
“Write us a better ending then.”
(Captain Blackbeard has heard about Frenchie’s ‘bit of fanfiction.’ He asks him to write a better ending for his and Stede’s story. Frenchie tries his best but soon other people want to tell the story the way it should have gone, including Fang, Lucius, Ivan, Jim, and ultimately Ed. In the act of surviving and telling stories together, relationships are considered, examined, and developed. Meanwhile, a ship trailing seagulls grows closer and closer on the horizon.)

Like he’s some kind of serious professional cyclist. A serious professional cyclist taking a break to drink tea and eat cake in Ed’s seat. At Ed’s favourite cafe. It’s not a competition or anything, but Ed used to be properly famous. Ed was a professional athlete. Kinda. He was a professional athlete, and he still engages with his sport, even if he doesn’t compete in it. He was here first. Thoughts on The Last Raid and all that comes after.
Additional Note: When I first wrote this fic and it's sequel, I was working from what I believed to be a fairly innocuous supposition--namely, most pirates were illiterate. Having listened to folks in the fandom, re: what this supposition means for the character of Ed in OFMD (a brown, indigenous man) as well as having read up on the historical figure of Edward Thatch (an upper middle class, and therefore, likely educated, man) I've changed the few references to Stede having taught Ed to read. Obviously, the accompanying podfic will reflect the old text, but I wanted to make sure that I changed the original due to enlightening fandom conversations.
