The boy steps forward with a shy wave and Naomi has to resist the urge to melt at the gesture. She crouches down to his level, giving him her kindest smile. “Hi sweetheart, what’s your name?”
“Percy,” he says, looking up at her with wide eyes. A small hand starts grappling with the hem of his shirt, twisting and untwisting the material.
“Percy? That’s a very nice name,” Naomi replies. His hands still as a smile stretches across his face at the compliment, revealing a missing front tooth.
“Are you magic? You looked like magic during your songs!” Any initial shyness seems to have faded as the boy starts to rock in place, watching her intently.
Naomi laughs softly. “Afraid not, darling.” She gives him a dramatic wink. “Though some people would say music is magic.”
Percy tilts his head, lips pushing out into a determined pout. “But you are! You played and your guitar started glowing! If you’re not magic, is your guitar magic?”
Naomi’s smile falters.
