The pain ripples from Viktor in waves.
He imagines bursts of it sweeping through the room, disturbing the carefully-lain objects on his bedside table, flowing through the curtains—now tightly shut against the light of the day, blowing gently through Jayce’s hair. The room around him pulses in time with his heartbeat, and he forces himself to breathe, breathe. The same way he has been for the past several hours. The same way he has for nearly thirty years.
Thirty years.
Many days—most, even—he finds the passing decades to be a gift. Unexpected, and cherished.
Today, the weight of every minute sinks him like a stone.

It turns to ice when Shane starts convulsing.
