Summary
The confession resounded in Terzo as, despite everything, he still found himself clutching his little bird tight to his chest some nights, terrified that he would lose him. Their sire was dead, not so much as a single bone remaining, but his mark lingered without their permission on their bodies and in their souls.
“He’s gone,” Secondo said firmly, breaking through the melancholic air that had befallen them. “We made sure of that.”
“I know,” Primo agreed. “But I worry someone might soon take his place.”

What the demon didn't realize was that he'd left a mark on the child's life that could not be so easily erased.
