The coffee machine dinged. Darrel damn near jumped at the sound. Right. Sweat trickled down his back as he picked up the cup, blowin’ at the top gently and takin’ a swig. Burnin’ coffee had melted his taste buds long ago, along with all the nerves crammed in with ‘em. It didn’t hurt no more.
The steam tickled his nose and the bitter taste filled his senses. Bitter. That was all he was anymore, right?

“Okay.” Shelby sounds a little skeptical. Then she yawns, long and loud. “I think I’m gonna try and go to bed.”
“Alright,” Raelynn says. “Maybe when you wake up we can hang out.”
Things aren’t back to normal. Things never were normal, even before Shelby slept with Lee. Raelynn just didn’t know how not-normal things were back then. But they’ve tentatively been forming a new normal—getting snacks and sodas larger than their heads at the gas station, getting milkshakes at the Chick-fil-A, wandering around the Walmart in the next town over. But they haven’t actually gone to each other’s houses yet.
“Yeah, maybe,” Shelby says noncommittally. “G’night.”or
The summer after junior year, the town gets a new stoplight. A lot of other things happen, too.
