“Yeah,” he shrugs, “You always play the best music. And then I can listen to it when you’re out, and I miss you.”
“When you miss me?” Wylan teases, shaking his head. “When are we even apart long enough for that to happen?”
Jesper bounces his leg a bit, watching his thumb brush over Wylan’s knuckles. “I always miss you when you’re gone."

Jesper finds him like this:
On his knees, hands around his throat, breath practically nonexistent and definitely not working in his favor.
If he were any more present, and if his panic wasn’t already threatening to kill him, he thinks his guilt would eat him alive too. Jesper shouldn’t have to deal with this. He shouldn’t have to pick up the pieces of Wylan’s pathetic excuse of a life. He shouldn’t have to watch Wylan fall apart over a nightmare, over something that happened months and months ago. Wylan lived, damn it. Wylan won, he got away, he escaped. To an outsider, Jan Van Eck did not succeed in his goal; he did not kill Wylan. And yet, his intent was not always to end Wylan’s life, but rather to end the things that make Wylan’s life good. If Wylan is happy, his father will not be far behind to remove that happiness. So no, Wylan did not win. He escaped, but his father is still controlling him.

“Tommy, if you say that one more time while we’re literally fighting a ghost to the death, I’m locking you outside and letting a Visitor get you.” Wilbur spins around, holding his rapier in front of him as he steps forward to block Tommy.
“You’re so boring. Phil would save me, anyway.”
Or, Tommy is as talented of a Listener as one can get, but he’s been turned down by every agency he’s tried. Wilbur runs a private agency with Technoblade and Phil, and when Tommy sees their ad in the paper, he finds himself with a job and, maybe, a family.

"You think it's anything like that?" She laughs, void of any amusement. She's burning, now. Hot and angry, feeling the flush of it rise in her skin, warming her cheeks and her chest. "Are you fucking serious?"
"I think it's worse," he says, quiet, refusing to back down entirely from the inferno. "I think it's worse for you, yeah. I don't think this is good for you, Santos. And it's getting worse."
Trinity doesn't want to take advice from the roommate who she thinks isn't going to stay around.

“Come on, kid,” someone says, rubbing his sternum with bruising fingers. Dennis desperately tries to swat the hands away, the bone already sensitive from the weight of the patient from just moments ago. “Open your eyes, Whitaker, come on. Look at me. Open your eyes.”
He twitches, his limbs flexing in odd and tight angles as he tries to expel the memory of the pain. He tries to speak, not to answer the question but to ask for help, help, anyone, anyone at all, his mom or one his brothers or the youth pastor who gives him bandages when no one is looking, just, God, please, please—
The best Dennis can manage is a deep gurgle from his throat.

When he gets seriously injured after an altercation with a patient, Dennis is forced to reveal parts of himself he would rather keep hidden.

You don’t even feel the need to apologize to Dennis until you start to realize how good he is. Like, good at heart. There’s nothing performative. He’s just a sweet boy. And you’re you, which never made you feel as bad as it does now that you’re surrounded by good people all day long. He’s the worst of them all, though. So fucking sweet, so considerate. He knows you hate the apologies, and he stops. He knows you hate the upstairs neighbors, and he says something to them to make them quiet down. He knows you hate talking about Langdon, and he gives you an out every time the man comes up.
Trinity probably should have known that Huckleberry was going to be trouble when she persuaded him to come live with her. She couldn't have known that he would become so important to her. (Seriously, this is the guy who killed a patient on his first day! What was she thinking?)

At an instant, Wylan’s bright smile turns precarious. It’s not so much anything to do with his expression as it is the sudden tense in posture, the way he so obviously tries to look unbothered.
Jesper grimaces, just as instantly. “You don’t have to–”
“It’s nothing. It was part of a treatment this ‘doctor’ my father called had, for my reading…” Wylan makes a small, unspecific gesture with an awkward smile. The silence that hangs is thick.

A discovery of a locked-away box of Wylan’s childhood belongings stirs up an argument between Jesper and Wylan, and then a conversation—but not before bringing up a few memories too.
