Meng Yao's village has a legend regarding the River Dragon of the West River, Lan Xichen. It says that he's already chosen a girl in the village to be his bride, and that is why he no longer carries his pearl with him.
Meng Yao doesn't realize the legend isn't completely accurate. He hasn't chosen a girl to be his bride. He's chosen a boy.

There were some entries in Lan XiChen's calligraphy in the first pages, but at the end of those, there were many more in another handwriting. Though those weren't as long as Lan XiChen's, they occupied all the journal's remaining pages.
