Three months is all he can take before he decides to throw his cover and find his way back to Steve, HYDRA hot on his heels. With him, Bucky has a memory drive of stolen information and a second personality sharing his body, courtesy of HYDRA’s brainwashing.
All Bucky wants is to deliver the information to Steve and the Alliance and finally return home, but when his ship is damaged he has no choice but to stop for emergency repairs. He's directed to 'The Mechanic,' who can supposedly help, but Bucky isn't exactly comforted when he meets the man in question.
But, with HYDRA breathing down his neck, Bucky doesn't have a choice — he's going to have to trust this Tony, whether he likes it or not.

There was a voice in his ear, soft but persistent. It whispered "Follow me," and he was inclined to listen. It led him down a dark hall, unfamiliar and disquieting. Despite the atmosphere, he felt no trepidation. The walls were lopsided, curling inward slowly, reaching for him. He felt he should scream, cry out in fear. But his mouth only twitched downward, doing his emotions half the justice they deserved.
"Follow me, follow me."
Soft humming, a careful hand running through his hair. Deep, hearty laughter that made him shudder with delight.
"Where are you?" He asked, voice muted and garbled.
He sank downward, the floor opening beneath his feet. He wondered, briefly, if his question was wrong. If he should've asked something different.
The humming stopped, and he was left in crushing silence as the floor swallowed him whole.

No one knows what to do with that. Marks only disappear when a person’s soulmate is dead. But one day, Tony had a mark and then the next he didn’t. Tony had barely had enough time to realize that something was wrong before it was back.

But when Steve is injected with the serum, his mark changes. Marks aren’t supposed to change. They’re supposed to remain static, as static as the fact that the sun rises in the east and sets in the west.

The Asset doesn't know if he was born with a mark or not.
He would probably say that he was born with one because everyone seems to have one but, if it's not important to his mission, then he doesn't know.
He does have one though. It appears immediately on his metal arm the first time they attach it to his shoulder.
