“Don’t you have some good news of your own?” she asks innocently. “I was wondering when you were going to bring it up.”

    “Hmm?”

    “Your engagement, silly! What else?”

    Kaveh’s jaw drops.

    “We’re all so exci—”

“Cup!” Tighnari shouts, barreling in from the garden.

“Collei, cup!” Cyno yells at the same time.

Alhaitham “accidentally” spins the Sumeru rumor mill.

    Summary

Bronco’s house is only five minutes away by bike, but with the biting wind in his face, it takes more like ten, and his hands feel like they’re about to fall off. Simeon really hates winter. The wind chill is unpleasant, but what he dislikes the most is the grey: dirty slush on the roads, bare trees, cloudy skies. He can’t fathom what people mean when they say they only see in black and white—he doesn’t even remember a time before there was color—but on days like these, he thinks he gets close to understanding.

Simeon Saint has always seen the world in a splendid wash of color, so when the ability is suddenly torn from him, he must learn to appreciate what he’s taken for granted.

    Esteemed Traveler and Paimon,

I humbly request your presence at the House of Daena for a special presentation. We will go out to dinner afterward—my treat. Paimon can have as much as she likes. It will be a proper event, so please dress for the occasion. Looking forward to seeing you.

    Summary

When he looks back up, Horace is holding a hand out to him and smiling softly. “May I have this dance?”

He covers his mouth and giggles. “Seriously? I don’t know how.”

“It’s really easy.” Horace takes both of his hands. “I’ll teach you.”

“Oh, this should be good,” he says sarcastically.

A severe winter storm causes Horace and Simon to get snowed in together. When tensions rise, Horace comes up with a way for them to find joy despite their circumstances.

“You’re needy today. It’s a good look on you,” he says.

“I’m not sure what that’s supposed to mean,” Simon responds, trying and failing to keep the edge out of his voice.

“It’s okay, Si. I like it.” As if that were the problem. He looks so fond, so foolish. “You can relax. You seem really strung out”—he puts up a hand as Simon starts to protest—“I know you don’t want to talk about it. It’s okay. It’ll be okay. I promise.”

Simon leans down and smiles at him. “Aren’t you, like, not supposed to make promises you can’t keep?”

After a harrowing encounter with a wraith from his past, Simon uses his devoted knight to regain some semblance of control.

Kay presses a hand to the glass.

“You’re going to pay for what you’ve done wrong, Mr. Saint, but you deserve a chance to turn things around. The chance you never got. People are going to look out for you from now on, and help you on your path.”

“Dumb girl,” Knight remarks in that annoying, know-it-all tone of his.

“Hypocrites shouldn’t speak,” you spit back at him.

    Summary

“Kaveh!” Alhaitham yells over the sound of the slaughter. “Leave this to me. Go and cleanse the Irminsul.”

Kaveh pretends not to hear him over the din.

“You can feel it too, can’t you? It’s withering.”

Kaveh shakes his head and chokes down his sob. “I won’t leave you.”

“You have to go, or the people of Teyvat will succumb to the forbidden knowledge within hours. My life is not more important than theirs. Will you doom them to be buried in the sand for me? Can you weigh a hundred thousand souls against one? Even the scales of the God of Justice are not so imbalanced.”

“I won’t leave you,” he repeats, more adamant this time.

    Summary

Their usual study sessions were now worthless to him. As Kaveh chewed on his pencil, deep in thought, Alhaitham would be fixated on the shape of his lips and how pretty they would look, bitten red and moaning his name. If he stretched while yawning and accidentally revealed a peek of midriff, Alhaitham would be overcome with the urge to kiss him there until he begged for mercy.

Alhaitham and Kaveh explore each other’s bodies.

    Summary

It isn’t Alhaitham lying in that bed.

Not with that red Akasha Terminal, glowing like Mehrak’s display on low battery.

Not with those uncanny red eyes, so sinister in their subtle wrongness.

Kaveh had told Idyia to be careful, that the red-eyed imposter could awaken at any moment and wreak havoc. But he hadn’t. He’d just lain there, barely conscious. Even as Kaveh spoon-fed him, first water and then mashed sunsettias, he couldn’t be roused.

Kaveh had thought he was going to die.

Hungover and angry, Alhaitham recklessly uses a divine knowledge capsule. A corrupted version of himself splits off and flees to search for Kaveh, who is somewhere in the desert, having run off himself. Will they reconcile like in his dreams, or are they doomed to perish in the mirage?

    Summary

“Why didn’t you come to class?” Kaveh asked accusingly.

“The first nice day after the rainy season, and you expect me to spend it inside?”

“You’re missing a very good lecture about elastic and inelastic column buckling.”

“So are you,” Alhaitham pointed out. “And don’t lie. As we speak, Professor Firnas is reading a chapter from the textbook verbatim, and everyone in that classroom is falling asleep. If I wanted to listen to someone spout outdated nonsense to me, I would ask the Akasha to read Sage Khajeh’s dissertation aloud while I do something much more valuable, like enjoying the scent of the season’s first padisarah bloom on the breeze, or appreciating the view.” He looked pointedly at Kaveh, who pointedly ignored him.

Two students fall in love and skip class. Not necessarily in that order.

    Summary

“I was offered a position at the Akademiya.”

You already know—you approved the offer letter. “Lecturer?”

“No, professor. Somehow they’re starting me at associate. I don’t have the experience, but…”

He doesn’t have to say it out loud. His portfolio speaks for itself. They aren’t going to make the Light of Kshahrewar jump through hoops for his own office the way they do for fresh-faced all-but-dissertation 20-somethings.

“That’s excellent. Congratulations. You’re going to be exactly what Kshahrewar needs right now.”

Kaveh doesn’t accept the praise. “There’s a woman in Spantamad who’s starting her sabbatical soon,” he says instead of thank you.

This, too, you already knew. You stamped Zinat’s leave form; she told you she was going to Inazuma to study some kind of dangerous contamination on one of the islands. But what does Kaveh have to do with her?

“I’ve arranged to rent from her.”

Now this—this takes you by surprise. “Oh” is all you manage to say.

If you love him, let him go. If he comes back to you, he’ll be yours forever.

    Summary

Would he ever have a love like that? A love that drives you to insanity?

He looks at Kaveh, silhouetted against the stained glass window outside the Akademiya. Yes, he thinks. He would claw his heart out with his own hands for this man. He would serve it with chelow and smile as Kaveh sinks his teeth in. The pain is fine if it’s him. The pain is good if it’s him.

Awash in the pale blue light, he is unfathomably beautiful, so beautiful as to be an illusion. A trick of the last remaining Moon Sister. But then Alhaitham touches his shoulder (warm, solid, real), and Kaveh turns to him once more. He doesn’t smile, but he doesn’t frown, either.

Soulmates share matching marks, a gift given by the gods to those who are chosen for one another, but Alhaitham doesn’t believe in them, and Kaveh doesn’t have one.

    Summary

    “Stop,” he says breathily.

“Can’t take it?” Alhaitham teases, lifting his head. His fangs stray too close to Kaveh’s neck, making him shiver. It’s too much. It feels too good.

    “Haitham, stop.

He stops. “Okay.” He’s panting a little, and Kaveh can see how hard he is in his boxers. He must be aching. “Can I ask why?”

    “You know why.”

    “I don’t.”

“Don’t be an idiot,” Kaveh snaps. He doesn’t mean for it to come out as unkindly as it does, but it does, and it makes Alhaitham wince. He rolls off and puts his shirt back on, leaving Kaveh naked and shivering.

Alhaitham and Kaveh reckon with the complicated mess of a relationship they accidentally threw into turmoil.

Doctor Zakariya, with all his knowledge of medicine modern and ancient, won’t be able to help him. But he’ll cross that bridge when he gets to it. Alhaitham shuffles his weight from foot to foot and stands there expectantly.

You’re dismissed. Kaveh sticks his tongue out as he turns the chalkboard so Alhaitham can read it. Alhaitham sighs at him and leaves.

Kaveh loses his voice as the result of an impulse purchase and realizes just how much Alhaitham has been listening.

    Summary

As he stood to leave, he looked up and caught the eye of a handsome boy with long, blonde, pinned-up hair with a group of people. They were loitering outside the library, laughing about something he couldn’t hear. Despite the balmy summer air, Alhaitham shivered under his gaze. It felt like he was looking into Alhaitham’s soul with his piercing eyes, red and shiny like rubies. But then, the line of his mouth curved up into a smile, his eyes crinkling in a friendly way, and he waved at Alhaitham. Alhaitham didn’t know what possessed him to wave back, but he did. He stared, transfixed, until one of the boy’s friends said something to him that made him laugh, and he looked away.

On an ordinary college campus, an extraordinary love story blooms.

    Alhaitham kneels before him.

“You get more beautiful every day,” he says.

A sad aspect of aging takes Kaveh by surprise, but his husband of many decades is there to comfort him, and always will be.

    Summary

“Tell me what’s on your mind,” Alhaitham prompts.

He doesn’t want to. He would rather eat his own hand than give Alhaitham more ammunition against him, but what choice does he have? Racking his brain for solutions has turned up nothing. If he doesn’t ask for help, Ebeid and Hilmi and the others will never get their library. His dignity is a small sacrifice to make for their education.

“If I tell you, you have to promise not to ask any follow-up questions.”

“That seems quite impossible. When it comes to you, I always have to clarify.”

Kaveh ignores the slight and lowers his voice. “I need to borrow some mora.”

Kaveh runs into trouble when he agrees to help build the library he designed for Aaru Village. If he and Alhaitham can fix the problem, perhaps they can mend their relationship in the process.

    Summary

Kaveh isn’t sure what to think of his roommate these days. It was simpler when he had just moved in, when he could resent Alhaitham and hiss at him and argue with him freely. He would spend his days cursing him out, and atone at night by preparing their meals and cleaning the house. Their relationship was still complicated, to be sure, and it probably always would be, but there was a certain simplicity back when Kaveh only had room in his heart for bitterness and hostility.

Kaveh goes into heat around Alhaitham for the first time since they fell out.
