Summary
A year in the life of Bucky Barnes and Steve Rogers in 1940-1941.
The room is small, the apartment isn’t much bigger. They live out of suitcases and boxes, not staying in one place for more than six months at a time, but in a room with no windows, Steve has never felt more at home, squeezed onto a narrow twin bed with his very best friend. Steve’s hands are cold when they close over Bucky’s and his fingers find the spaces between his and as if it is the only thing Bucky’s body knows how to do, he curls his fingers, trapping Steve’s with his.

Defrosting is supposed to take a while, a hunk of meat isn’t supposed to thaw in minutes in a machine, at least that isn’t how Steve remembers it. The bigger the cut, the longer it takes.

In the four nights he stays with them, he hates every second that he's in Steve's bed, paranoid that he'll knock him out with the mass of plaster he isn't sure will ever be sawn off his arm. Bucky Barnes likes to sleep on his stomach with his head rested on his folded arms. He sleeps best in the fall when the temperature drops and a thin blanket is all he needs to stay comfortable. The sun is welcome in the daytime and it can shine down on him and turn his skin golden while it's high in the sky all it wants, but at night when there's a sleeping body next to his, he needs the chill in the air that fall brings.
