One night they were at Eddie’s house, drinking a 12-pack while Buck maintained that he was cutting weight and didn't want any popcorn but then looked at Eddie’s bowl so longingly that Eddie started throwing popped kernels for Buck to catch in his mouth. They’d both drunk enough already that this is not an entirely successful endeavor. Soon enough a piece of popcorn bounced off Buck’s nose and Eddie caught it and then, without thinking, popped it right in Buck's mouth. And somehow, for some reason, Buck had licked the salt and butter from Eddie's fingers and that was two years ago and Eddie thinks about it all the time. All the time.

Eddie Munson looks up from his phone, and his dark eyes widen in surprise. “Jesus Christ.”
“Uh. Steve, actually,” Steve offers awkwardly, hand still raised where he’d knocked. As first impressions go, Steve’s sure he is decidedly not making a good one.
“I’m sorry,” Munson huffs, shaking his head a little. His curls shiver around his face and oh god he’s even sexier in person. Steve is never going to survive. “I just- wasn’t expecting…”
“A man?” Steve preempts, with the knowledge that he’s one of two male attendants who tend to work this flight, and that it’s usually all pencil skirts and heels. Not that he’d be particularly averse-

The gold makes the boy look like a fresco, or stained glass drenched in divine light, a prince in a storybook, like a carved bust of a hero from myth.
He’s about the fucking prettiest thing Steve has ever seen in his goddamn life, a creature formed of sand and sunshine and ocean, laughing with straight white teeth and golden blonde curls and eyes a fragment of perfect California sky blue. His smile catches in Steve’s gut like a hook, a demand at his core that reels him in, helpless.
Steve follows because he can’t help it, because he doesn’t know what to say to the boy yet, but he knows he has to say something, anything.
Steve and Billy meet the summer before Billy comes to Hawkins and it feels easy to fall in love in the sunshine. The reality of their words colliding in the corridors of Hawkins is much harder.

Steve’s mom suffered with poor mental health and Steve didn’t understand. Eddie does too, and maybe Steve understands better now.
Sometimes though, sometimes his mother would shut the bedroom door and she would not leave the room for days. His father would sleep on the couch, or make excuses and go away on “business”.
There would be no sweet smells of perfume, only dark and silence. His father told him that his mom was sick, to let her rest. Steve didn’t understand why she didn’t want to see him. When he was sick, he wanted cuddles and toast and hot drinks with honey and his Bunny with one ear loved almost all the way off.

“Would it make you feel special if it was?” Eddie sneers, prickling at her saccharine contempt, fingers busy picking at the frayed edge of his jacket. Stevie wants to slap his hands away from his own arms. “Hate to disappoint but no, it’s not. Tragic for you, I know.”
Eddie kicks off the wall to stand a little straighter, uncurl from the slouched way he’d been standing. He’s a lot taller than her than she realised, his frame suddenly making her feel boxed in.
“If you want me to kiss you, I will. I was trying to be fucking nice about it, give you an out or something-”
“I’m not backing down. I do what I say I’m going to do.” Stevie reaches for him, annoyance surging within her, fist curling in the collar of his tee to tug him down as she rises up on her toes. It brings them nose to nose, sharing breath. “So why don’t we get on with it.”

Sentimentality for the departed is something he can no longer afford. Everyone left has cried their fair share of tears. What is left is what is left and they must all simply make the best of what they can. Caleb tries and having Nott with him staves off the loneliness. He rarely thinks on his family any more, or on his once companions, on Astrid and Eodwulf. Dwelling on the lack of them, on their fate, does him no good, just deepens the ache in his chest. Grief has no place in a world that demands so much even to survive; you must become numb to it.

When Caleb is like this, Fjord almost forgets the ways he’s falling apart. The sunlight renders him into something poetic and belonging to a storybook, the sadness in his features the creasing line between the brows of a tragic hero, the golden light catching in his hair in a halo of burning copper making him the weary saint of a stained glass window. It’s beautiful, but Fjord’s heart aches for a smile instead.
